History of the Atomic Model – J.J. Thomson By Hour 3 J.J. Thomson’s Time Period !   J.J . Thomson’s time period was from 1856 to 1940. More specifically, he discovered electrons and made his own version of the atomic model in 1897. J.J. Thompson’s Main Idea !   J.J. Thomson’s maid idea was that he discovered that the atom could be divided into even smaller pieces-‐
negatively charged particles. !   Those smaller pieces were what we now refer to as ‘electrons’. !   Thomson also made his own idea of an atomic model, using this new knowledge. !   He found that there was an error in Dalton’s theory. J.J. Thomson’s Biggest Change to the Atomic Model !   J.J. Thomson’s biggest change to the atomic model was that he discovered electrons, so his model showed them. !   He thought that electrons were distributed through an atom, like plums in pudding, hence the name ‘plum pudding model’. !   Today, the model may be referred to as the chocolate chip ice-‐cream model.
