Center for Human Rights and the Environment
This document was prepared by the Office for Summit Follow Up. Its purpose is to provide
information on the Center for Human Rights and the Environment. It contains the basic data and a
listing of supporting documentation submitted by this civil society organization (CSO) pursuant to
the Guidelines for Participation by Civil Society Organizations in OAS Activities.

Primary area of activity and its relationship to OAS activities
The mission of the CEDHA is to protect the environment and human resources by
strengthening and promoting the ties that exist between them at the local and international levels.
Its specific objectives are to develop and strengthen:

Understanding of the connection between human rights and the environment

State, civil society, and private sector capabilities to bring about a more sustainable
social and environmental development
Its activities are grouped into three programs:
a.
Provide access to justice when environmental degradation gives rise to human rights
violations
b.
Promote social responsibility among entrepreneurs in Latin America
c.
Contribute to introducing the concept of socio-environmental sustainability into trade
agreements

Contributions of the organization that could be of interest to the OAS:
The CEDHA has been working in a number of countries of the hemisphere to promote
actions inside the OAS related to the protection of human rights, and sustainable and environmental
development. It has also presented various amicus curiae to the Inter-American Commission on
Human Rights and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. The CEDHA is working to bring
about a more harmonious protection of the environment and human rights.

OAS work areas to which the CEDHA can provide support:
The CEDHA’s work is related to that of the OAS, especially as concerns the work of the
Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, and
the agencies responsible for sustainable development and environment.
