Course outline
The course will consist of tutorial lectures in the form of case presentation
(case based learning). These tutorials were designed to cover all aspects of
periodontal disease and their treatment modalities.
Objectives:
1.
Helping the students to implement their periodontal knowledge by
discussing different cases from aspects of diagnosis, prognosis and
treatment planning.
2. Analyzing clinical and radiographic findings in order to develop correct
periodontal diagnosis.
3. Developing different treatment options and discussing the short
and the long-term prognosis of each.
4.
By observing the clinical cases, students will fully comprehend the
different phases of treatment and the proper sequence for each phase.
5. This will help students understand how to present a case with emphasis
on case notes, charting, diagnosis and treatment planning.
6. Implement the periodontal knowledge into practical grounds in the
form of case management. The students should be able to analyze their
gathered data to develop correct diagnosis, prognosis and treatment
plan of their cases.
7. The student must be able to correlate clinical and radiographic findings
with periodontal disease and develop an understanding of the effects of
different treatment modalities.
8. Comprehended and implement the correct sequence of
different dental specialties in relation to the periodontal
treatment.
9. The student must be able to understand the interrelationship
between systemic disease and periodontal pathology and the
effect of periodontal disease on the overall health. They must
have strong knowledge about the protocol for management of
medically compromised patients.
10. Students must implement the supportive periodontal therapy in their
case management.
Lecture Objectives
Diagnosis and management of gingival enlargement in
patients with renal transplantation
At the end of the lecture students should be able to:
1- Understand the association between periodontal disease and renal
disease.
2- Understand the role of renal diseases and their treatment
(hemodialysis, antihypertensive agents and immunosuppressive drugs
on periodontal status and its treatment plan.
3- Understand the correlations between periodontal disease and the
general health .
4- Know the association between periodontal disease and the other risk
factors (local or systemic).
5- Be aware of the importance of patient’s education regarding the
connection between periodontal and systemic conditions.
Root coverage and pocket reduction as combined surgical
procedures
At the end of this lecture, students should know the following:
a. Definition of mucogingival problems, mucogingival
surgery and periodontal plastic surgery
b. Etiology classification and sequales of gingival recession.
c. Therapeutic modalities of mucogingival problems.
d. When to and not to perform root coverage procedure.
e. Criteria of successful root coverage.
f. Surgical technique for treatment of both the distal ridge
periodontal defects and root coverage in the same session.
Periodontal signs of vertical root fracture
At the end of this lecture, students should know the following:
1234-
Definition of vertical root fracture
Etiology of vertical root fracture
Periodontal diagnosis of vertical root fracture
Management, treatment modalities, and prognosis
Pathologic tooth migration
At the end of the lecture students should be able to:
1-They became able to diagnose the most common gingival and
periodontal diseases through the follow of a simple periodontal diagnostic
algorithm, including radiological and other special investigations, thereby
ensuring that disease does not go undetected.
2-Understand the association between periodontal disease and pathologic
tooth migration.
3-Understand the role of healthy and diseased periodontium in
supporting the tooth position in the dental arch.
4-Understand the effect and mechanism of gingival over growth (drug
induced gingival hyperplasia) on pathologic tooth migration.
5-Know the association between pathologic tooth migration and trauma
from occlusion, loss of arch integrity and bite collapse.
6-The students became able to recognize the influence of dynamic
occlusal disharmonies or existing periodontal lesions and will have a
practical understanding how intervention with occlusal therapy may
improve the prognosis of affected teeth.
7-The students will have an understanding the value and clinical
outcomes of the multidisciplinary care for the periodontal problems.
This integrated management solutions of periodontal problem include,
periodontal- restorative interface, orthodontics and periodontal health
role of occlusion in periodontal therapy, endodontic-periodontal
considerations dental implants as alternative therapy for tooth loss and
the periodontal medicine relationships.
8-The students will have an understanding of how the periodontal
surgical approaches can manage the periodontal lesions, e-g. the
indications and contraindications of the resective periodontal techniques
and knowledge about the indications, principles, materials and
predictability of the regenerative techniques, which can be used to restore
and reconstruct the periodontal tissues that were destructed under the
effect of the disease process.
Topic Presentations
These topics will prepared in the form of annotated bibliography of
the most recent articles which are related to every topic.
The periodontal topics include the following:
1- Non-surgical periodontal therapy .
2- Clinical outcomes of non-surgical periodontal therapy
3- Management of furcation lesions
4- Guided tissue regeneration
5- Criteria of successful Surgical crown lengthening
6- Peri-implantitis.
7- Preparation of edentulous ridge to receive a pontic
8- Management of NUP
At the end of these periodontal topics students should be able to:
1- The students became able to understand the dental implant systems as
an alternative therapy to replace the hopeless teeth in periodontally
compromised patients. Also they became able to understand the criteria
of success, surgical protocol and how to identify the reasons of
complications and failure and its management.
2- They will have an understanding how systematic factors and medications can
impact the periodontium and also able to understand the role of systemic risk
factor management in periodontal treatment. They can understand the
importance of close collaboration and team work with other members of the
dental team and medical colleagues when treating patients, with periodontitis and
know risk factors for periodontal disease.
3- They will have an understanding how the periodontal infections can affect the
systemic health and how is the periodontal management for the medically
compromised patient?
4- The students became able to be aware of mucogingival surgical techniques that
can dissolve the esthetic problems associated with gingival recessions and ridge
defects.
5- This curriculum aims to outline the goals of different periodontal treatment
modalities (non-surgical or surgical) and to provide an overview of the clinical
outcomes that are expected following treatment.
6- The students became able to understand the healing events that follow nonsurgical treatment and also able to realize its limitations. Students became able to
be aware of the range of instruments that are available for removing tooth
deposits and also became able to identify the various types of instruments and
have an understanding of the purpose of each periodontal instrument.
Clinical Objectives
The clinical part consists of surgical and non-surgical cases. Each student
has to complete two surgical and three non-surgical cases. One of the nonsurgical cases will be an exam case.
Objectives of non-surgical cases
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
The students must be very confident in diagnosing cases
with different periodontal disease. They must be able to
translate the clinical and the radiographic findings into
charts then analyze their data to establish diagnosis,
and to develop overall prognosis in addition to
individual teeth prognosis.
Students must know how to write up their cases.
They must have the ability to formalize proper treatment plan and
alternative treatment plan. In addition they should know how to
present the case to both the patient and the instructor.
They have to know how to place their patients on customized a
recall system to insure proper maintenance therapy.
They must be able to treat their cases as a whole. They have to
know how to correlate between different fields of dentistry and
the correct sequence of the treatment.
Objectives of surgical cases
1.
2.
3.
4.
Expose students to different surgical modalities of treatment in
advanced periodontal cases.
Apply the theoretical knowledge of surgical treatments to clinical
grounds
Learn the proper sequence of surgical treatment in relation to
other specialties (eg perprosthetic periodontal surgery sequence in
relation to endodontics and prosthetics)
All cases must be discussed in details with an instructor prior to
booking an appointment for surgery. Student will have to present
a case write-up which includes the rationale for surgery, the type
of surgery, flap design, osseous correction (if needed), suturing
5.
technique and any post operative instructions and medication if
needed.
It is not expected of students to master surgical techniques
however, they will be graded on their case presentation, surgical
instrument preparation, infection control and post surgical
management.
