THE SUNSHINE TIMES!
News from Ms. Linskey’s Class
Dear Parents,
We are having a great year in 2nd grade! Our class won the
“Golden Shelf Elf Award” for having the best behavior in the library
during the first 2 weeks of school. We also earned 32 “links” for
receiving compliments from other teachers and administrators in
the building. As a reward, our class earned a Popsicle party and a
class fish! Keep up the great work! 
What We Are Learning:
In Reader’s Workshop…we have reached 25 minutes of
independent reading Stamina! We are learning that
readers use many different strategies to figure out tricky
words. In class we say, “When Words Are Tricky, Roll Up
Your Sleeves!” We have learned the following
accuracy strategies:
-
Think about the story and ask yourself “What
makes sense?”
-
Look for parts in the word that you know.
-
Reread the sentence and ask yourself “What
looks right?”
We are continuing to focus on the following reading
comprehension strategies in class:
-asking & answering questions while reading
-retelling stories
-describing how characters respond to challenges
How to support your child in reading: Read with your child for at
least 20 minutes every night and sign their reading logs. Encourage
your child to practice “checking for understanding” by asking “who,
what, when, where, why, and how” questions while they read.
Make sure your child is reading “just right books” on their reading
level. Encourage your child to practice retelling stories after they
read. When your child comes to a “tricky word” don’t read the
word to them. Encourage your child to “Roll up Their Sleeves” and
use the accuracy strategies to figure out the tricky words.
In Phonics…we will be focusing on the following
spelling patterns during the month of September.
- Long o words (ex: doe, grown, boat)
- Long e words (ex: dream, feel, yield)
How
to ihelp
home…
- Long
wordsat(ex:
bright, pie, sigh)
In Science… we will be learning about the three
stages of matter (solids, liquids, & gases).
In Social Studies…we are learning about the Creek
and Cherokee Indians. Soon we will be learning
about the contributions of Sequoyah.

In Math Workshop… we are adding &
subtracting within 20 using mental strategies
(ex: doubles & making ten). Soon we will be
using addition & subtraction to solve onestep word problems.
How to support your child in math: Make sure that
your child completes their math homework each
week. Visit the math links listed on my webpage for
extra practice.
In Language Arts….we are learning about
collective nouns (ex: a gaggle of geese)
and irregular plural nouns (ex: feet, children,
teeth). Soon, we will be learning about
context clues.
In Writers’ Workshop… we are continuing to
write narratives by choosing small moment
topics that are important to us. We are
focusing on stretching out our small moments
by including details in our writing. Students
are learning to include the following in their
narratives:
- Introductions & Conclusions
- Using 5 Senses to Magnify Each
Moment
- Bring Stories to Life by Making
Characters Talk, Feel, and Think
-
How to support your child in writing:
Give your child ample amounts of opportunities to write:
Ask your child to help write the grocery list
Ask your child to create a menu, while you cook
the family dinner
Write letters to friends or grandparents
Read stories together and ask your child to write
about his or her favorite part
