Plate Tectonics and Landforms
Climb the Ladder: Move Your Plate!
Complete the activities to show what you have learned about how moving tectonic plates change and
shape Earth’s surface.
1. Work on your own.
2. Choose one item from each rung of the ladder. Check your choices.
3. Submit your results by Thursday, December 11th.
__
Boundary Flipbook
__
Density Differences
Draw a flipbook to illustrate what
landforms form (type of stress and
direction of motion) at different types of
plate boundaries. Show a convergent
boundary, a divergent boundary, and a
transform boundary.
Write a poem or song that explains how
density differences between oceanic
lithosphere and continental lithosphere
affect interactions between these two types
of lithosphere at convergent boundaries.
__ Be a Broadcaster
__ Extra! Extra!
Imagine that you are a news broadcaster
and that you are on location as one of the
processes of plate tectonics occurs.
Describe in detail what is happening as if
it were breaking news.
Imagine that you were able to travel back
in time to the time of Pangaea. Write a
newspaper article that would be published
describing your experiences.
__ Puzzling Terms
__ Before and After
Design a crossword puzzle using at least
five terms of chemical and physical
weathering, such as abrasion and
oxidation. Create an answer key for your
crossword puzzle.
Choose a land feature and create a poster
depicting this land feature. Divide the paper
in half and draw a picture of how you think
this landform probably looked 1 million
years ago and on the other half draw how it
looks today. Attach a note describing the
changes and the causes of these changes.
__ Signs of Depression
__ I Just Need Some Relief!
You should include at least one depressed
area on your topographic map. Be sure to
include the depression contours using the
proper symbols. Draw a topographic map
of this discovered area. Draw contour lines
to connect points of equal elevation.
Include enough contour lines so there are
at least 3 index contours. Be sure the
elevation change between each contour
line is the same.
Your topographic map should include an
area of either high or low relief. This can be
indicated through the contour intervals and
lines, this is usually determined by the type
of land features present in the map. Draw a
topographic map of this discovered area.
Draw contour lines to connect points of
equal elevation. Include enough contour
lines so there are at least 3 index contours.
Be sure the elevation change between each
contour line is the same.
