Emergency preparation is one of the most important skills an athletic trainer needs. Review and questions 8 CEU’s Limit: 35 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM Workshop II Cadaver Anatomy of Elbow, Wrist, and Hand Northeastern University Faculty This workshop to be held at Northeastern University will focus on the exploration of the elbow, wrist, and hand through cadaver dissection. An experienced anatomist will lead the cadaver dissection while an orthopedic surgeon facilitates discussion related to injury pathology, treatment, and rehabilitation. In addition to the multiple cadaver dissections, a tour of Northeastern University’s state of the art Behrakis Health Science Center will also be available. Attendees will be transported to Northeastern University from the hotel free of charge. Those that wish to drive will be able to park at a discounted rate. Cost: $45.00 3 CEU’s Limit: 35 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM Workshop III Medical Massage Kate Decker, NCTMB, CSCS, Velocity Sports Performance, Cherry Hill, NJ During this hands-on workshop the participant will learn a variety of medical massage therapy techniques to address injuries to the competitive athlete. An overview of postural assessments and postural changes due to the athletes’ sport will be offered in order to help reduce the chance of further injury. Trigger point therapy and deep tissue massage are a few of the approaches which will be utilized in order to assist in bringing your athlete back to performing in their sport. The focus of this workshop will be on a common sense approach to communicating ideas about supplements. The latest research about supplementation and a discussion of how to talk with your athletes’ will complete this workshop. Cost: $30.00 2 CEU’s Limit: 45 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM Workshop V Shoulder Assessment/Rehab with Emphasis on Scapula Stabilizers Peg Houghlum, PhD, ATC, PT, Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA This session will focus on the specific identifying issues that should be included in a shoulder examination prior to establishing a rehabilitation program. Rationale for scapular sources creating rotator cuff pathology and need for specific scapular muscle rehabilitation will be presented. Additionally, a progressive, evidence-based rehabilitation program will be created to meet the needs of successful treatment of rotator cuff pathology. Cost: $30.00 2 CEU’s Limit: 35 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM Workshop VI Promoting Critical Thinking and Problem Solving in Athletic Training Education Susan Guyer, ATC; PhD, Springfield College, Springfield, MA Using videos and group activities we will explore the concepts of critical thinking in action, highlighting both its skills and dispositional dimension. The session will provide participants with an accurate, enjoyable, and effective demonstration/presentation on the basics of teaching and assessing critical thinking of the college level athletic training students. Participants will identify, evaluate, adopt, and adapt at least two “teaching for thinking” pedagogical strategies into their own teaching regardless of subject matter. Assessment tools appropriate for classroom or clinical use will be briefly described. High School and college administrators will facilitate a discussion on how to talk with administrators about receiving a pay raise, setting a work schedule, and applying for promotion. This session is for high school, college athletic trainers, and for those in the academic setting. Cost: $25.00 1.5 CEU’s Limit: 40 Sunday January 7th 7:30 AM - 9:00 AM Workshop VIII Radiology 101, Reading MRI’s and X-rays, etc Cliff Fawcett, ATC; RN, 3B Orthopaedics, Philadelphia, PA This workshop will teach the athletic trainer how to read basic x-rays as well as more advanced studies such as MRI’s. Many examples will be shown and the small workshop setting will allow for more interaction between the presenter and the audience. Cost: $25.00 1.5 CEU’s Limit: 40 7:30 AM - 9:00 AM Workshop IX Joint Mobilization/PNF Techniques Linda Gazillo, Ed.D; ATC, William Paterson University, Wayne, NJ This workshop is hands-on and will focus on why and how to incorporate joint mobilization and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) diagonal patterns into an athlete’s daily rehabilitation protocol. The principles, indications, and contraindications for both types of manual therapy techniques will be discussed. Various joint mobilization and PNF diagonal pattern techniques will be demonstrated on a model. In addition, the participants will play an active role in this workshop by performing the techniques on their peers. By the end of the workshop, the participants should have an adequate understanding of the principles and applications of joint mobilization and PNF diagonal pattern manual therapy techniques. In addition representatives from injury software companies will demonstrate their injury tracking software. Other options for tracking injuries will be discussed. This workshop will discuss the importance of documentation, what is necessary to document and the ease to which pertinent information can be documented. Cost: $25.00 1.5 CEU’s Limit: 40 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM Workshop XI Counseling Athletes with Depression/Eating Disorders Len Zaichkowsky, Ph.D, Boston University, Boston, MA Frank Perna, Ph.D, Boston University, Boston, MA Jim Howland, LMSW, Boston University, Boston, MA In this workshop participants will learn the athletic trainers’ role in helping athletes change health behaviors and the most recognizable problems related to adjustment. Athletic trainers will learn how to support positive health behavior change through listening and challenging the student athlete. The athletic trainer will learn how to teach important skills such as goal-setting, imagery, positive self-talk, and taking responsibility for recovery. Cost: $25.00 1.5 CEU’s Limit: 40 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM Workshop XII Laser Therapy Joe Gallo, Dsc; ATC; PT, Salem State University, Salem, MA This workshop will provide the participant with an overview of the use of laser in rehabilitation. The presentation will discuss the characteristics of laser energy with an emphasis on the manipulation of treatment parameters associated with dosing therapeutic laser. A research based perspective on dosing laser to treat soft tissue injuries, trigger points, and neuralgia will be discussed. The physiologic effects, indications and contraindications to laser therapy will be reviewed. Upon completion of this workshop the participant will be able to appropriately choose the power (mW), wavelength (nm), pulse frequency (Hz), energy density (J/cm2), and treatment duration (min) to deliver therapeutic laser in clinical practice.
