Preparing For Surgery
Depending on your health and the complexity of the procedure, we will perform your surgery in the office, at Stony
Point Surgery Center, or at Henrico Doctor’s Hospital. We will provide printed instructions and a written list of risks
for each surgery. If you did not receive this information, please contact our nurses. Prescriptions will be faxed to
the pharmacy you indicated to us on registration. Call your pharmacy to verify receipt, and pick up your
prescriptions before surgery. Certain antibiotics and steroids may be prescribed to begin up to a week before the
scheduled procedure.
Office Surgery
Office surgery may be scheduled directly with our nurse or receptionist. You may generally eat and drink normally
before office surgery, but you may be wise to bring a driver, in case of discomfort or oral sedation. For most cases,
we recommend that you wear a washable, button front shirt that does not need to be pulled over the surgical site or
surgical dressing. Women may wish to wear a washable tank top or camisole for privacy and for protection of their
outer garments. Jewelry and make-up must be removed before facial surgery. Please arrive 30 minutes early if you
require oral premedication.
Outpatient Surgery
The vast majority of surgeries are scheduled next door at the Stony Point Surgery Center. This fully
accredited ambulatory surgery center is the largest in Virginia. Dr. Armstrong is the past chief of staff of the surgery
center and remains an active member of its many boards. Please go to their web site for pre-registration and
preoperative instructions. (or, see attached)
Inpatient Care & Observation
Patients who may require overnight observation and inpatient care may be scheduled at Henrico Doctors
Hospital. This 340 bed hospital on Forest Avenue has been named one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals. You will
have to register in person several days in advance, as blood tests, EKG and other tests may be required by the
anesthesiologists. They will provide preoperative instructions when you arrive.
NOTICE OF FINANCIAL INTEREST: Dr. Armstrong is an investor in Stony Point Surgery Center. Similar services
are available elsewhere in Richmond.
Stony Point Surgery Center Guide to Outpatient Surgery
PRIOR TO YOUR SURGERY
After your surgeon has scheduled your procedure at Stony Point Surgery Center, representatives from the Center
will contact you. The representatives will review any pre-op testing, your medical history, medications you are
taking, and discuss any concerns or answer any questions you may have about your financial responsibilities to the
Center.
Deductibles and co-payments are due prior to surgery. For your convenience we accept VISA, MasterCard, and
Discover, as well as personal check and cash.
If your child is scheduled for a surgical procedure, you and your child are invited to tour the facility. If you have any
questions, concerns or would like to schedule a tour, please call us at (804) 775-4500.
THE DAY OF YOUR SURGERY
(This does not apply to Laser patients)
Adults & Children: You may have a light meal (toast and clear liquids) up to 6 hours prior to arrival, and only clear
liquids up to 2 hours prior to your arrival. Clear liquids include tea, black coffee, soda, water or pulp free juice
(standard orange juice is not a clear liquid).
Infants may have breastmilk (only) up to 4 hours prior to arrival and infant formula up to 6 hours prior to arrival.
Take all medicines as usual on the day of surgery except fluid pill and diabietes pill. Patients on insulin are to take
one-half (1/2) of their normal dose of insulin.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing (button down the front shirts are preferred).
Bring your insurance cards, forms and information, and method of payment with you.
Leave your valuables, jewelry and personal belongings at home.
Do not wear makeup, false eyelashes, or contact lenses.
If your child is having surgery, one parent must remain in the center at all times. Your child may bring a small toy
to carry.
After your procedure, you must be accompanied and driven home by an adult. No patient will be permitted to
leave the Center alone.
The number of visitors for any one patient may be limited in the recovery area due to space constraints.
You will be discharged when you recover from the effects of your procedure and any medications you
received.
It is normal to feel weak and drowsy. Please plan to have someone with you for at least 24 hours after your
procedure.
AFTER YOUR SURGERY
Do not forget to follow these guidelines after your surgery:
 Please follow the instructions you receive from your surgeon and the Center’s staff.
 If you have any questions after your procedure, please contact your personal surgeon.
 Remember to make an appointment for a follow-up visit with your surgeon.
