C. JOB PURPOSE
To provide and direct occupational therapy services according to patient needs within the
available resources to ensure optimal health care
D. KEY RESULT AREAS
1. To execute all occupational therapy management duties, functions and
responsibilities to the best of ability and within all applicable legislation
2. Service Delivery:
-
To manage and provide a high quality diagnostic and therapeutic
occupational therapy service according to patient needs
-
Give expert clinical advice and factual information of a professional nature on
institutional occupational therapy
-
Provide a consultative occupational therapy service to health professionals
and patients
-
Plan own work and administer work procedures to meet the objectives for
the department ensuring efficient service delivery
-
Monitor and evaluate the occupational therapy services to comply with the
valid standards and indicators
-
Implement Quality Assurance programs for overall effective service delivery
3. Clinical Responsibilities:
-
Develop protocols to ensure that the Occupational Therapy service complies
with the OHS Act
-
Implement Occupational Therapy inspection services
-
Make recommendations with regards to policies/strategies for the effective
functioning of the Occupational Therapy unit
-
Act as a consultant in the patient rehabilitation programs
4. Policy Formation
-
To determine a policy relating to the development, provision and
maintenance of a comprehensive health care service
-
To determine a policy relating to development and provisioning of goal
directed education and training for occupational therapists
-
To formulate a policy relating to safety standards within the occupational
therapy unit
-
To solve complex professional and management problems and policy issues
by exercising sound judgment on the best possible outcome
5. Financial Responsibility:
-
Manage the allocated budget and implement the financial management
system for the Occupational Therapy Unit
-
Budget for personnel in accordance with the MTEF having cost effectiveness
and efficiency in mind
-
Ensure a cost effective occupational therapy service
6. Management of:6.1 Human Resources
-
maintain optimum utilization of human resources in the Occupational
Therapy Department
-
Encourage a multidisciplinary approach by fostering close working
relationships with other departments
-
Promote a work environment conducive to development and learning for
occupational therapists, student occupational therapists and other
occupational therapy staff
-
Delegate, authorize and supervise work of personnel in the area of
responsibility whilst providing support and guidance
-
Promote sound labour relations in compliance with relevant legislation
-
Conduct performance management to assess staff’s performance and
institute appraisals where appropriate
6.2 Other Resources

Ensure proper use and control of equipment

Evaluate the functioning of the equipment
-
Provide expert guidance and advice on the selection and purchase of
Occupational Therapy equipment whilst ensuring quality and cost
effectiveness
7. Education and Training:

Provide clinical training for Occupational therapy students, staff and
allied disciplines
8. Communication:

Establish and maintain internal control and report systems for timeous
communication of decisions and policies

Engage in effective communication and interactions between
departments, personnel and other service providers in order to render
quality service
9. Transformation:
To respond to the priorities of transformation within the occupational therapy
department by:

Supporting the medical superintendant with the transformation
initiatives

By ensuring equitable services that are responsive to the needs of all the

c. Supervise the quarterly audit of special programs (HRB,
psyche, ANC, KMC, CP) and assess whether the programs
are performing according to the Annual Plan and
implement changes where needed for QI
d. Develop a system for the OTA to work in whilst
implementing a craft program so that equipment is better
managed and time and quality of care is improved
Assist with administration
a. Assist with the formation of the annual budget and
operational plan
b. Assist in the compilation of the quarterly reports (general
and OT forum)
c. Contribute to the monthly report
d. Assist in producing monthly rosters
e. Assist in checking the accuracy and quality of stats and
monitor trends for QIP, financial and HR reasons
f. Performance of HOD duties and acceptance of
departmental responsibility in case of absence of HOD

Excellent skills in all facets of occupational
therapy, especially regarding neuro and early

BSc (Occupational Therapy)
5 years, of which at least 3 should be in
management
Sound ethical and moral standing, patience,
empathy, initiative, creativity
Excellent verbal and written English. Verbal
competency in isiZulu would be an advantage
