Physical geography, Floods, Soil, Farming:
Geography for the Nile River Valley civilization was very important.
The nile would flood each each year starting in July and lasting until November.
This flood would provide new, rich soil for the egyptians.
The Egyptians grew their crops along the banks of the River Nile on the rich black soil, or kemet which was left
behind after the yearly floods.
Seasons:
Akhet - the inundation (June-September): The Flooding Season.
Peret (October-February): The Growing Season.
Shemu (March-May): The Harvesting Season.
Crops:
The most important crop was grain.
Grain was the first crop they grew after inundation (flooding season).
The ancient Egyptians used grain to make bread, porridge and beer.
Once the grain was harvested, they grew vegetables such as onions, leeks, cabbages, beans, cucumbers and
lettuce.
Farmers planted fruit trees and vines along paths, to give shade as well as fruit.
Animals:
Animals helped them with jobs like trampling in the seeds, pulling the plough, eating unwanted grain or wheat and
providing the Egyptians with food and drink.
They kept animals such as cattle, goats, pigs, ducks, cows, and geese.
Pyramids:
(1). Beginning of the Pyramids: The forefather to the pyramids were royal tombs carved into rock and covered with
flat-roofed rectangular structures (mastabas), and were built from the start of the Dynastic Era (2950 B.C.)
(2). Giza:
(a). Last of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world.
(b). The main three structures at the Giza plateau were built over a three generations by the rulers Khufu, Khafre,
and Menkaure.
(3). Khufu:
(a). Built with an estimated 2,300,000 stone blocks which can weigh up to 50 tons each.
(b). Khufu’s tomb had massive boat pits one of which had a completely disassembled cedar boat that, when
constructed, was 142 ft long and made of 1,224 individual pieces.
(4). Facts (other): The pyramids symbolize the rays of the sun and are designed to help the soul of the king ascend
into Heaven and join the gods, specifically Ra.
