WELCOME
You’re having a baby
We’re pleased that you chose Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital for your prenatal and postpartum care. We have
an outstanding staff of trained professional nurses to care for you during your stay and ensure that all of your
personal and medical needs are met 24 hours a day. We look forward to meeting you and your new family, and
we are quite certain that you will have a positive experience during your stay.
Rest Assured, We’re Here for You
The anticipation for the birth of a new baby is an exciting time for everyone. Our Maternity Services team
will be there with you, every step of the way, providing a secure, serene birthing experience. We appreciate
the opportunity to share this very special event with you, and are honored to be the top choice for maternity
services by local physicians and parents in the Santa Clarita Valley.
An Exceptional Nursing Team
Our nursing team has advanced experience in obstetrical care and is committed to providing exceptional
health care to mothers and their infants. Our team stays current with the latest advances in their profession and
maintain certifications relevant to their field.
You will also find that many of our nurses live in the Santa Clarita Valley community. They are not just caring for a
patient, but often for a friend or neighbor. This friendly, compassionate care is extended to anyone who passes
through this unit, no matter where they are from.
Freedom of Choice
At Henry Mayo, our nurses and staff want to honor their patient’s desires regarding their birthing experience.
As long as the mother’s and baby’s health is not compromised and with the doctor’s permission, the mother can
request specific birth plans. It is important to discuss the written birth plan with both your obstetrician and our
staff so that we can do our best to accommodate it. We also offer flexible options regarding pain management.
Comprehensive Services
To ensure a high quality, comprehensive continuum of care for all
mothers and babies who need extra care, Henry Mayo opened a
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in 2012. Our NICU provides
a warm, nurturing environment to meet the needs of our tiniest
patients and keep them right here in our own community, close to
family and friends.
Henry Mayo’s NICU is staffed for a full range of highly-specialized
neonatal care services and includes state-of-the-art equipment and
materials to ensure the best care for babies. The NICU also provides
the additional security and comfort that every expectant mom needs.

the Women’s Unit will take parents through every step of the birthing experience at our hospital. From preadmission to discharge, you will be guided through the entire process and will have the opportunity to ask
any questions that may arise during this time.

Tyke Hike
Our free Tyke Hike program helps prepare children for their new
responsibilities as a big brother or big sister. Siblings-to-be will
learn how to behave around a newborn, hold a baby properly,
as well as other important safety tips. Throughout the program,
the children receive small gifts that reinforce what they learn,
such as a little scrub sponge to teach them the importance of
washing their hands when touching the new baby. For toddlers
to pre-teens, accompanied by an adult, this tour is offered in
English. Spanish translators are welcome to attend with child.

MATERNITY SERVICES
Having a baby is one of the most joyous times in a person’s life, but it’s
also one of the most stressful. To help make your delivery and stay at
Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital as stress-free as possible, we’ve
put together some information for parents-to-be. If you have any
questions, call Henry Mayo at (661) 200-1520, or visit our website –
www.henrymayo.com – for additional information and resources.
We look forward to meeting you and your new arrival.
Before your hospital stay:
Take a tour
Henry Mayo is located at 23845 McBean Parkway in Valencia. The
Women’s Unit is located on the second floor of the main hospital
building. Our Parent Preview Tour takes place each Thursday and one
Saturday a month. A Spanish-language tour is offered on the last Thursday
of the month. For complete tour schedule, call (661) 200-1520.
Pre-Admit
You should complete the hospital’s pre-admission form at 24 weeks or more. The pre-admission form is
included in this packet and can also be picked up at our admitting desk or downloaded from our website
(www.henrymayo.com). The completed form should be dropped off at the admitting area between 8 a.m. and
7 p.m., or faxed to (661) 200 -1523 or call (661) 200 - 2970 to register by phone.
Pack an overnight bag. Your bag should have such essentials as:
n
n
n
n
n
n
Basic toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, etc.)
Undergarments (nursing bras if you’re going to nurse)
Nightgown, bathrobe, and slippers
Loose, comfortable clothes to go home
Going home outfit for the baby
Receiving blanket
Buy a car seat
California law requires all children under the age of 8 years or 80 pounds to be secured in a car seat while
riding in a car. Make sure the car seat is securely fastened in your car prior to your discharge from the hospital.
Know your pediatrician’s role
While you are here, your baby will have a newborn exam done by a pediatrician who will evaluate your baby’s health.
Sometimes these visits are arranged by your medical group and sometimes you must arrange for these visits yourself, so
ask questions of your health plan or your medical group about how a pediatrician will be involved in your baby’s hospital
stay. If you need to, please select your pediatrician before your hospital stay and provide his or her name to your nurse.
You will also need to follow up with your assigned pediatrician within 48 hours after you both leave the hospital.
Call at the onset of labor
To help us prepare for your arrival, call the Labor and Delivery unit at (661) 200 -1512 prior to coming to the hospital.
Ideally, the expectant mother should make the call so she can discuss her symptoms with the labor nurse. When you
arrive at the hospital, go to the admitting desk on the first floor of the main hospital building.

PATIENT INFORMATION
What you need to know
Visitation
The Women’s Unit has visiting hours from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 4 to 8 p.m. daily. Fathers can visit at any
time. While healthy siblings with no colds, flu or other contagious illnesses are typically allowed to visit when
accompanies by an adult, we ask that you not bring anyone under the age of 14 to visit patients during flu
season or other community outbreaks.
Visitation during labor
Family and friends are allowed during labor, but no more than two attendees in addition to the coach will be
allowed in the labor and delivery area.
New fathers
Fathers are encouraged to go home and sleep between delivery and discharge. If the mother is in a private
room, the father may sleep overnight in a sleep chair or recliner provided. If the mother is in a semi-private room
with another patient, the father will not be able to spend the night. This is to protect the privacy of the other
patient.
Rest for new mothers
To ensure new mothers get as much rest as possible, and to keep the noise level down, we ask that you limit
phone calls and visitors during your hospital stay. Call one or two loved ones who can relay information to your
family and friends. If you would like us to hold your calls so that you can get some rest, let the hospital operator
know by dialing “0“ on your room phone. We have implemented “Just Us Two“ at 2 p.m., which allows our
moms and babies to rest from 2 to 4 p.m. each day. We do not encourage visitors during this time and will
coordinate our care to minimize interruptions to allow moms and babies to bond and rest.
Security
Infant security and safety is very important to us. As a result, we do many things to keep your baby safe. All
newborns wear an ankle band that activates an alarm if the baby leaves the unit. Mothers and fathers also
wear special wrist bands that identify them as parents of the infant. In the Women’s Unit, nurses wear unique
ID badges. It’s important that you learn your nurse’s name and not let anyone take your baby out of the room
without your permission. Never leave your baby unattended.
EDUCATION PROGRAMS
Labor of Love
Childbirth Education
The miracle of giving birth is an amazing experience. We’re here to
assist you in this joyful event and help alleviate the jitters you may
feel as you get closer to your delivery date. After all, your baby’s
birth will profoundly affect everyone involved and it deserves the
utmost thought and careful preparation.
Our philosophy is that a woman should feel confident in her
body’s ability to give birth. After attending our program, you’ll
be able to make better informed choices as you plan your
approach to childbirth. Our Labor of Love Childbirth Education
classes will provide you with all the tools you will need, such as
showing videos of diverse childbirth situations, role playing, and
breathing and relaxation practice sessions. You will also learn what to expect when you arrive at the labor and delivery unit, problems that could occur during labor, and newborn care. After you complete
these classes, you will develop your own childbirth philosophy and feel more empowered to make decisions about your body and your baby.
In the Labor of Love classes, parents will receive support, education, and resources through our comprehensive
curriculum, which includes Successful Breastfeeding, Child/ Infant CPR, and Baby Basics.
For guidance after childbirth, our Labor of Love program also includes a series of three support groups: our
postpartum support group helps new moms with the transition into motherhood; our breastfeeding workshop
helps mothers provide the most optimal nutrition for their newborn; and for those who have suffered a loss
(a miscarriage, stillbirth or newborn death) a perinatal loss and bereavement support group to help ease the pain.
Call the Labor of Love Registration Hotline at (661) 200 -1520 or visit www.henrymayo.com.
Telephones
There is a phone in the labor and delivery room. Phone cards can be used to make long distance calls. In
addition, cell phones are permitted in the waiting room and patient rooms. However, cell phone cameras are
allowed only when approved by our staff.
Videotaping
Videotaping is not allowed in the delivery room. However in most situations it is allowed before and after
delivery. Videotaping of staff is permitted only with their permission.
Questions
Please feel free to contact the coordinator of maternity services and educational programs with any questions
or concerns you may have. You may reach our Women’s Unit at (661) 200-1512, or our Lactation Services at

GENTLE TRANSITIONS
LACTATION SERVICES
Bonding begins
A healthy bond
Baby-Friendly
How you feed your baby is one of the most important decisions you’ll make as a mother.
Breastfeeding your baby is a bonding and rewarding experience, studies show that
breast milk is the ideal form of nutrition and provides many health benefits for both
mother and baby. Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital is staffed with Lactation Specialists
(CLE, IBCLC) committed to supporting you in a warm, nurturing, and caring
environment throughout your breastfeeding experience.
Henry Mayo’s Baby Friendly designation benefits new mothers and their babies by providing the necessary
support to initiate and maintain successful breastfeeding. We believe that the first few days and nights can be
the most challenging for mom and baby. Our goal is to provide you with the skills you need to be successful
in caring for your baby. The care we provide for you and your family will make this transitional period an easy
one. For more information, please call (661) 200 -1515.
Prenatal Breastfeeding Education
Golden Hour
Studies show that couples who attend a prenatal breastfeeding class have
a longer breastfeeding duration than those who don’t. During our class,
you’ll learn the art of successful breastfeeding from one of our Lactation
Specialists. You will learn proper positioning and latch-on techniques, common
breastfeeding problems, and address any questions you may have. We’ll also
discuss pumping and transitioning for working moms.
The “Golden Hour“ allows for mom, baby and a support person to have uninterrupted time to bond while
mom and baby recover. If you are having a cesarean section, the “Golden Hour“ will be initiated when both
mom and baby are stable and will continue through the recovery period until transferred to postpartum.
Skin-to-Skin
Immediately after birth, we encourage uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact until baby completes the first
feeding. Skin-to-skin means that baby is placed belly down, in diapers only, directly on the mother’s
bare chest with a warm blanket placed on the mother and baby. A mother’s chest is the best place
for the baby to adjust to life in the outside world. Compared with babies who are swaddled or kept
in a crib, skin-to-skin babies stay warmer, calmer and cry less. The first hours of snuggling skin-to-skin allows
mother and baby to begin the bonding process which promotes maternal and infant attachment. Bonding,
soothing, and breastfeeding promotes health and well-being of infants and usually continues well after birth.
Dads can enjoy skin-to-skin time also.
Rooming In
To deliver the most up-to-date health care, we now practice full-time rooming-in for you and your baby. This means that
you and your baby will be cared for in your room - including all baby care education as well as medical care and feeding.
With the support of the nursing staff, rooming-in will allow you to learn feeding cues from your baby and develop
confidence in taking care of your baby before your discharge from the hospital. Rooming-in allows infant procedures
to be performed at the bedside so that you and your family members feel included in the care of the baby. One nurse
takes care of mother and baby.
Our nurses will ensure that all of your personal and medical needs are met 24 hours a day. The care we provide for
you and your family will make this transitional period easier for everyone. Our goal is to provide you with the skills
you need to be successful in caring for and feeding your baby.
Delayed first bath
A creamy, protective substance called vernix is present on the skin of many newborn babies. We do not bathe
babies in the first day because leaving this substance to absorb into your baby’s skin helps protect against
dryness and bacterial infection.
Inpatient Consultations
Our Lactation Specialists are available seven days a week. We perform a formal feeding evaluation of the mother
and baby with bedside assistance for positioning, latch-on and milk transfer. We will address your breastfeeding
concerns, and offer solutions to common breastfeeding problems. Lactation Specialists are also available in the
NICU to assist you with pumping and offer breastfeeding support.
Outpatient Consultations
Continued breastfeeding support after you discharge from the hospital is very important to successful breastfeeding. During
an outpatient consultation a lactation specialist will evaluate breastfeeding, and provide you with breastfeeding education and
resources needed to meet your goal. We will work closely with you and your health care provider to develop a lactation plan
and address any concerns you may have. By appointment only.
First Weeks Breastfeeding Workshop
Led by our Lactation Specialists, our “First Weeks“ and newborns (0-3 months) weekly breastfeeding workshop provides a
nurturing place where you can meet other breastfeeding mothers. We discuss common breastfeeding concerns such as
growth spurts, sleep related issues, and developmental milestones. Thursdays, 9:30 to 11 a.m., Pavilion Meeting Room. Free
Lactation Center
We offer a full supply of breastfeeding accessories including; hospital grade breast pump rentals, retail breast
pumps, supplies, nursing bras, nursing pillows, and much more. The Lactation Center is conveniently located
on the Henry Mayo campus, call 661- 200 -1515 for more information.
