EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN PROGRAM
ADMISSION PROCEDURES
Applicants seeking admission to the EMT program must meet admission requirements as outlined in this
handout. Qualified applications are reviewed on a rolling-admissions basis. Qualified applicants will be
accepted throughout the year until the classes are filled. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply
early.
APPLICANTS SHOULD BE AWARE THAT, BEFORE STARTING THE PROGRAM, ALL
EMT STUDENTS MUST BE ABLE TO MEET THE FOLLOWING TECHNICAL STANDARDS
REQUIRED FOR THIS OCCUPATION.
Technical Standards
Applicants who are admitted to the program will be required to validate by signature (may be required to
demonstrate), their understanding of the specific physical, communication and didactic skills of the
academic and clinical environment which include the ability to:
1. Follow oral and written instructions.
2. Put on protective clothing and equipment correctly without assistance.
3. Lift 50 pounds straight up from the floor and place back down on the floor carefully. Lift 20
pounds from the floor, carry 10 feet, and place on a surface 36 inches in height.
4. Detect both visual and audible alarms.
5. Correctly read aloud written instructions.
6. Demonstrate fine motor skills in manipulating small objects.
7. Stand from a seated position and walk 300 feet.
Any student who cannot perform one of the listed technical standards should contact the Coordinator of Services for Students
with Disabilities. Applicants who are pregnant will also be required to submit a note from their physician stating that they
are able to safely complete the course.
BACKGROUND CHECKS
Students are not required to submit background checks to the College prior to admissions. In order to attempt state and
national certification as an Emergency Medical Technician, candidates will be required to submit a criminal background
check for approval. If potential candidates have a criminal history, please contact the Department of Health and
Environmental Control, Emergency Services Department for more information on eligibility.

Emergency Medical Technician Basic Program (EMT) Admission Requirements
Eligibility Requirements
1. Applicants must be a SC high school graduate (certificate of completion does not qualify) or have a
GED. Applicants must submit their official high school or GED transcript along with their
admissions application.
2. Meet one of the following test criteria:
 Work Keys (preferred test): Reading for Information 4 or higher and Math Program
Solving 4 or higher; OR
 COMPASS/Accuplacer meet minimum “college level” testing requirements; OR
 ACT Verbal 19 of higher, Math 17 or higher, and English 17 or higher; OR
 SAT Verbal 480 or higher and Math 440 or higher.
 Completed non-DVS course work
 Biology Test: Students will be required to take the biology placement test
All test scores must be within 5 years from the date of application.
Applicants must submit official transcripts from ALL colleges attended. All college transcripts
must be complete and current.
3. Applicants must be permanent U.S. citizens for at least one year prior to the date of application.
Eligibility Requirements for Current High School Students
Current High School Students:
In order to be accepted into the EMT Program, as a high school student, the applicant must:
1. Meet the testing criteria as outlined above,
2. Be classified as a 2nd semester senior, based on credits,
3. Obtain a letter of recommendation from the principal:
 granting permission to apply for the program, and
 permission to complete all necessary coursework
4. Letter from the principal must be given to OCTECH’s Middle College Admission Counselor,
5. Candidates cannot attempt certification until after turning 18 years of age, and after graduating
from high school.
*Qualified applicants who attended college outside of the United States and who meet citizenship requirements must provide
an official translation transcript(s) from World Education Service. Fees for English translation of international transcripts
must be paid by the applicant. (See Registrar for details.)
Misrepresentation of information on any required forms or a willful attempt to misrepresent residency will make an
applicant ineligible for admission to the EMT curriculum.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN

16-17 SEMESTER HOURS
The Emergency Medical Technician certificate prepares students to work with the Emergency Medical
System (EMS). Students learn the skills to care for critically-ill and injured patients, including airway
management, patient assessment and trauma care. Upon completion of the program, students will be
prepared to earn a state and national certification for a Basic Emergency Medical Technician. Students
must have a SC high school diploma and must meet the minimum admission testing requirements in
order to be accepted into this program. Students will also be required to take the Biology Placement
Test.
