Job Description
Background:
WCRC is a volunteer-based organization based in Oakland with a staff of eleven and a core
group of 165 committed volunteers providing a broad-base of culturally competent cancer
services including information and referral to community resources, assistance and advocacy,
outreach and education, support groups, practical in-home support, emergency financial
assistance, and cultural and healing arts programs. WCRC is an active partner in communitybased coalitions to expand service delivery, research and advocacy. WCRC also offers special
programs targeted to reach Latinas and African American/Black women. Since 1986, WCRC
has served more than 80,000 women.
Position:
The Multicultural Navigator is a full-time exempt position reporting to the Multicultural
Client Services Manager and working in collaboration with the Bilingual Care
Manager/Contra Costa County, Clinical Director, Training and Volunteer Manager,
Community Outreach Manager, Development Manager, and Business Manager.
The Multicultural Navigator coordinates, recruits, trains, supervises, and evaluates
Community Health Advocates/Comadres (CHAs), who directly assist women with cancer in
different settings including, public hospitals/health centers, community clinics, other
community based agencies, and in the home.
Primary Responsibilities include:







Assist clients, family members, and caregivers in their understanding of the diagnosis,
treatment options and resources available to support them
Assist clients in identifying and addressing barriers to obtaining treatment; and offer
suggestions that facilitate healing on all levels including physical, mental, emotional
and spiritual
Develop and maintain close working relationships with key referral medical centers,
primarily with Alameda Health System (Highland Hospital)
Coordinate Community Health Advocates, in providing assessment, personal
emotional support and referral to cancer education, financial assistance, survivorship
and other programs
Coordinate Community Health Advocates in providing ongoing community health
outreach and advocacy presentations at health fairs, and to CBOs, churches, social
service organizations, media, etc.
Coordinate and develop in-service training modules in collaboration with program
staff and evaluative rubrics for monitoring skills development and progressive impact
of Community Health Advocate work
Maintain accurate program data for ongoing program analysis/reference, evaluation,
and development, and assist in the preparation of grant reports

Provide support and services such that they are in line with WCRC’s commitment to
cultural humility and the organization’s core values (community, compassion, and
change)
Other Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:
 Educate clients about clinical research trials, and distribute educational
materials/informational literature pertinent to the client’s needs
 Facilitate ongoing community outreach presentations at health fairs, and to CBOs,
churches, social service organizations, media, etc. with Community Health
Advocates/Comadres
 Provide direct assessment, personal emotional support and referral to cancer
education, financial assistance, survivorship and other programs
 Other duties as assigned which support and expand services to Latina women and
support the mission of the WCRC
Qualifications and Experience:
 B.A./B.S. Required
 Bilingual English/Spanish required, Bicultural preferred
 Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Database Management
 Experience dealing with chronic illness, grief, death and dying
 Understanding of cancer and/or women’s health issues
 Must have strong volunteer management skills
 Must be self motivated, energetic and committed
 Must be comfortable speaking on the phone and communicating via e-mail
 Ability to work independently as well as in a team setting
 Ability to work flexible hours/35 hour work week
 Demonstrates sensitivity and comfort working in a culturally diverse environment
 Ability to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, clients and outside agencies
 Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Spanish
 Minimum two years experience in a health care or social service agency setting
 Experience developing program evaluation assessments/outcomes preferred
