MSP STUDY GUIDE 2014 6TH GRADE IDEAS AND CONCEPTS • Cells -Single cell/ multi-cell organism - parts of the cell (nucleus, cell wall, etc.) -Life functions of cells- (plant cell/producers) – chloroplasts, consumer (herbivore), predator, decomposers -genes/alleles/pundit squares (dominant and recessive genes) Resources: FOSS WEBSITE, 6th grade notebooks, textbooks online • Body systems – know systems work together -circulatory system, reproductive system, respiratory, skeletal, nervous system • Cellular respiration- • Characteristics of LifeReproduce, eliminate waste, use energy, and grow • Systems (open/closed)-Open= matter input and output occurs in system Closed= no matter enters or leaves the system Moon-phases of the moon Solar systems-seasons (rotation of the earth, elliptical orbit, tilt of the earth,) • Moon Phases-eclipses • Earth/Moon system • Solar system Ideas: • Do students have access to their 6th or 7th grade science notebooks? • Finish product of the ideas above could be presented in a diagram, poster, or booklet or students could work in stations • Use the FOSS web for DOL and Planetary • Quick lab with the use of ambassadors to lead labs? 7th GRADE IDEAS AND CONCEPTS • Energy transfers and transformations through an ecosystem and mechanical systems Conduction, convection, radiation • Food energy- how it moves through the body or an environment. (Food web/Chain) • Photosynthesis- chloroplasts • Trophic levels- (producers/consumers and decomposers) • Food webs – build a food web then show trophic levels and energy transfer • Mono lake ecosystem relationships • Adaptation of one species (how and why it occurs) • Inputs/Outputs of systems-(How the output of one system is the input of another) • Forces interacting • Newton’s Law • Balanced and unbalanced forces • Use roller coaster to identify forces and Energy transfer- friction, kinetic, potential • Mechanical energy • Gravitational and frictional force • Kinetic and potential energy Ideas: • Use YouTube – rollercoaster paper with diagram to identify forces etc…. 8th GRADE IDEAS AND CONCEPTS • • Properties of Matter o Def.- Sub. that makes up the universe o 3 types-solid, liquid, gas (characteristics) o Properties of matter-density, volume, mass, color, texture, melting pt, boiling pt. o Density formula=D=m(g)/v(cm3) o D=g/cm3 o Regular object= LxWxH=Volume (cm3) (in3) 1mm=1cm3 o Irregular Object=Displacement=Volume o Mass and volume definitions o 1gram per cubic centimeter=D of water o Relat. Between D and temperature----Sink or float? o Phase change-Melting, sublimation, evaporation, condensation, freezing o Technological Design= designing objects based on the characteristics of the material. (We design airplanes using aluminum because two characteristics of aluminum is that it’s lightweight and strong.) o Chemical reactiono Product- result of the chemical reaction o Reactant- substances that create the product. o Conservation of Mass- matter can neither be destroyed or created only changed o Solvent-what does the dissolving of a solute (universal solvent=water) o Solute-substance that gets dissolved o Solutiono Saturationo Solubility- dissolvable, it can dissolve CATASTROPHIC EVENTSSTORMS -Vortex-Thunderstorm-Atmosphere -Tornado- forms over land -Hurricane- hurricane form over warm tropical oceans (know the other names-cyclone, typhoon) -Funnel cloud -Eye wall How heat is transferred- convection, conduction, radiation Temperature- measurement of heat energy in solid , liquid or gas Uneven heating of the earth’s surfaces- storms, wind, ocean currents… * absorption * reflection Greenhouse EffectHeating soil and waterHot surface heats air above it -landbreeze, seabreeze and how they occur Stable air mass VS. Unstable- temp and humidity Latent heat—heat needed to cause phase change from one state to another Condensation- L6 CovectionWeather fronts- front of the storm-boundary between two different air masses with different temperatures and humidity Read weather map *E travels from hot to cold* Ocean currents-convection El nino/la nina and how it changes world weather Upwelling EATHQUAKES----------------------------------------------------------------------Types of EQ waves Body waves travel through the body of the earth (P and S waves) Surface waves travel on the surface of the earth (Love waves and Raleigh waves) Compression Wave- P WAVE --like sound waves they compress and expand the material they travel through energy travel parallel to direction the wave is moving Transverse Wave-S WAVE- energy (wave) travels perpendicular to direction of wave. Liquefaction- solids behaving like a liquid by vibrations. EQ waves radiate in all directions SeismographSeismogram- paper recorded on Seismometer- mobile recording device Epicenter- & how to determine the epicenter FocusTriangulation using seis. Stations to pinpoint epicenter AftershockLocations of geological events- tectonic plate boundaries . Subduction zones, Layers of the earth Mid Atlantic RidgeDivergent plates and characteristics/formations Convergent plates “ “ Plate tectonic theory Latitude & longitude How waves are used to study the earth’s interior and how they behave in the different layers. Lithosphere Asthenosphere SonarHow Models are used FaultsDifferent types of faults and characteristicsRelationship between depth of EQ and damage Deep focus VS Shallow focus EQ’s Continental drift, Pangaea theory and evidence (fossils, (plant/animal), shape of continents, and mountain ranges.) Convection in the mantle VOLCANOES----------------------------------------Destructive and constructive effects of eruptionsCauses and effectsHow scientists forecast eruptionsDefinition of volcano, vent, rift valley, ash, fissure eruptions, hot spots, freezing, melting, magma, lava, magma chamber, lava dome, lava flow caldera, crater, pillow lava,
