Raw Dog Food Selection Guide
Drs. Foster & Smith Educational Staff
With the growing number of brand-name raw dog foods available, it's important to
know how to make the heathiest choice for your dog, as well as what your options
are. Let our veterinary nutrition experts help you select the perfect diet for your best
friend.
How to choose the best commercial raw food for your dog
1. First and foremost, involve your veterinarian when deciding whether to feed your dog a raw diet in the form of
dehydrated food or freeze-dried food. Your veterinarian can offer advice and suggestions as to the nutrition your dog
truly needs to thrive, especially if your dog has food allergies or other nutritional limitations.
2. Consider your dog's age/life stage. Puppies, adult dogs, pregnant dogs, lactating dogs, and senior dogs all have
different nutritional needs. While many dehydrated dog foods and freeze-dried dog foods come in formulas for all
life stages, strive for a life-stage-specific food whenever possible. And when in doubt, ask your veterinarian for
guidance.
3. Consider your dog's preferences. For example, if you know your dog simply won't eat chicken, look for a food
containing lamb, beef, venison, or other type of protein that may appeal to him. You may have to experiment with a
few types of food before you find the perfect one.

Freeze-dried foods from Stella & Chewy's tempt your dog with real meat, poultry, vegetables, fruit, and much more
in two easy-to-serve formats. Offer Dinner Patties - in scrumptious recipes such as rabbit, chicken, beef, lamb, quail,
goose - by themselves, over kibble, or rehydrated as a wet food. Or, blend bite-sized chicken or beef Meal Mixers
with your dog's regular kibble for exciting variety. Meal Mixers also rehydrate with water for use as a complete
meal. Stella & Chewy's foods are for dogs at all life stages.
Before you switch, here are a few tips for a smooth dietary transition . . .
As with any pet food transition, a slow transition will produce the best results. Introduce the new dehydrated food or
freeze-dried food into your dog's diet gradually. Mix 10% of the new food with 90% of the old food on the first day, then
increase the quantity of the new food by 10% while simultaneously decreasing the quantity of the old food by 10% each day
over the first 10 days. If your dog is older, sick, or finicky, extend the transition time to 3-4 weeks. If your dog experiences
loose stools or an upset stomach, you've likely transitioned to the new food too quickly; simply slow your transition until
digestive upsets resolve.
