Patient/Public Involvement in SDCEP Conscious Sedation in Dentistry Guidance SDCEP (Scottish Dental Clinical Effectiveness Programme) are producing updated guidance on sedation in dentistry and would like to recruit patient or carer representatives to contribute to the guidance development process as members of a Guidance Development Group (GDG). These representatives will have the opportunity to ensure that patient issues are taken into account and to influence national guidance affecting the care of patients receiving sedation for their dental treatment. SDCEP is an initiative of the National Dental Advisory Committee (NDAC) and NHS Education for Scotland (NES). We work with dental and medical professionals across and outwith Scotland to develop user-friendly evidence based guidance for priority areas in oral healthcare. Aim of the project: The aim of the project is to produce up-to-date clinical guidance for dental professionals who are involved in providing sedation for patients having dental treatment. The guidance will cover different types of sedation for children and adults and the equipment, staff and facilities required, with due consideration given to patients’ perspectives, staff training and provision of dental services. Related information for patients may also be developed. Timescale and participation required: For each guidance development project, SDCEP convenes a GDG comprising a range of individuals each with a particular interest in the topic. The project is managed by members of the SDCEP Programme Development Team who support all aspects of the work. We expect that guidance development for this project will take approximately 6-8 months from when the GDG first meets (scheduled for June 2016) and will involve appoximately 3 full day meetings that are likely to be held in Edinburgh. One of these meetings may involve an overnight stay. Between meetings, some communication by email and/or telephone will be required to read, discuss and provide constructive comment on the draft guidance. Patient role: The primary aim of SDCEP guidance is to improve the quality of patient care, therefore it is vital that the guidance reflects the needs and views of patients. The role of patients/carers in a GDG is to provide an independent patient perspective at each stage of the guidance development process. The patient/carer will use their experiences and views to champion issues of wider public/patient concern, to ensure that the guidance is worded sensitively and that recommendations adequately address patient issues and concerns. The patient representative will be able to contribute to the development of the guidance through discussion and by providing written or verbal comment (whichever is appropriate) on guidance drafts. Patient attributes: Ideally the patient representative would have personal experience of sedation for dental treatment or would have experience as a carer for such a patient e.g. the representative could be the parent of a child who has undergone dental sedation. Enthusiasm, time to commit to the work of the group and the ability to express their views are required for this role. Previous experience of group working may be helpful. Support and expenses: All reasonable travel, subsistence and childcare expenses will be met by SDCEP.
