Form 1 Standard for Infection Prevention for Immunisation Clinics
Hand hygiene
sink
A clean well maintained hand washing sink with liquid soap in a
dispenser and disposable paper towels/air dryer must be available at
each clinic. This sink should be dedicated for hand hygiene only (i.e.
not used for equipment decontamination). Paper towels if used can
be discarded into black bag waste (non-hazardous) unless a specific
risk of infection has been identified.
Hand hygiene
Staff hands must be cleaned before and after vaccinating each
child.
Alcohol hand rub, Clinell sanitising wipe or soap and water may
be used to clean hands (see hand hygiene sink requirements
above). If using a gel based hand sanitizer or Clinell sanitising wipe,
clean hands with soap and water when they become sticky (usually
after about 5 uses of the alcohol gel).
Arms must be ‘bare below the elbows’ to facilitate hand hygiene.
PPE
Gloves and aprons are not required unless contact with blood
and body fluid is anticipated (as part of Standard Precautions).
Some disposable gloves and aprons should be available at each
clinic in case of body fluid contact e.g. a child vomits or faints and
causes themselves an injury.
Clean clothes/uniform should be worn each day. If performing
dirty tasks before the clinic, protect your clothes/uniform with a
plastic apron.
Environmental
cleaning
The table/surface used for documenting and distributing vaccine
must be visibly clean at all times and wiped with a Clinell sanitising
wipe at the start and finish of each clinic.
Waste
Dispose of sharps waste into a UN compliant sharps box.
All non-sharp waste should be discarded into a black waste bag.
Skin Prep
No skin cleansing is required prior to vaccination if the skin is
visibly clean. If the site is not visibly clean it should be wiped soap
and water.
Vomit bowls
Single use vomit bowls only
After Care
Following the immunisation provide child with a cottonwool ball to
hold over the injection site. Before applying a plaster ask the child to
discard the cottonwool ball into a black waste and apply a plaster.
