Four Roles of the Writer
Meaning Maker
Recognizes that the purpose of writing is to construct and
communicate a specific message to the reader. Makes connections
between what he/she is reading and his/her own understandings
through writing. Communicates and expresses his/her own ideas
and his/her interpretation of the world or responds to the ideas of
others through a variety of texts. Carefully considers ideas, word
choice and sentence structure to revise and clarify meaning.
Text User
Writes for a variety of authentic purposes, choosing topics
relevant to his/her life. Carefully chooses structures and text form
according to the audience and purpose for writing. Uses a variety
of planning skills and thinking processes to write and represent
ideas. Thinks critically and creatively while experimenting with
finding his/her author’s voice. Studies, recognizes and sometimes
imitates authors’ craft. Designs text construction considering
stylistic and artistic elements.
Code User
Uses his/her knowledge of text organization, arrangement and
spacing to construct text effectively. Works to build vocabulary
relevant to topics. Writes for readers with an awareness of
spelling and conventions. Uses anchor charts, dictionaries and
other support materials to draft and edit texts. Uses
organizational (graphic organizers) and informational tools
(glossary, table of contents) to help “break the code” of text for
the reader.
Text Analyzer
Analyzes and deconstructs texts to understand design in order
to construct his/her messages. Writes to represent point of
view, beliefs, values, perspectives, and interests. Writes to
respond thoughtfully to personally relevant issues or concerns,
sometimes suggesting alternatives, taking action, critiquing or
challenging messages of others. Revises and edits writing with
attention to the effectiveness and/or persuasiveness of the
message.
