Lymphadenopathy may be due to:
• Direct result of HIV
• Manifestation of secondary infections
• Manifestation of neoplasms
• CD4+ T cell counts >200/μL
– Kaposi’s sarcoma
– Tuberculosis
– Castleman’s disease
– Lymphoma
• Advanced disease
– Atypical mycobacterial infection
– Toxoplasmosis
– Systemic fungal infection
– Bacillary angiomatosis
• Monoclonal gammopathy (MGUS)
– Viral infections
– Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
– Plasma cell malignancy
Lymph node biopsy
• Indicated in patients with CD4+ T cell counts
<200/μL
• Not indicated in patients in early stages unless
there are signs and symptoms of systemic
illnesses or unless the nodes begin to enlarge,
become fixed, or coalesce
