TYKS CANCER CENTRE STRATEGY 2017
Patient care in our operating environment is part of the normal health care. It is funded through billing the
place of residence of the patient, which is based on Finnish legislation. Scientific research, teaching and
training is produced through the University Health Campus Turku collaboration. Its support services are
produced at the Turku Clinical Research Centre (TurkuCRC), the Hospital District of Southwest Finland, the
Centre for Clinical Informatics and research ward unit, and Auria Biobank as well as the Centre for
Biotechnology, Central Animal Laboratory and Turku Centre for Disease Modelling at the University of
Turku. The basic costs of research are divided between the contracting parties and supported by external
research funding.
Concrete targets
1. The Cancer Centre aims to integrate cancer treatment in the west coast area. The target is to create
common treatment chains, indicators for the quality of care, and a common follow-up of access to
treatment. The website of the Cancer Centre will contain information for the patient, next of kin, staff,
researchers and cooperation partners.
2. The Cancer Centre coordinates the cancer research in the Turku University Hospital expert responsibility
area and secures the progress and funding of research as well as the swift and efficient transfer of
information received from research and innovations into practical patient care.
3. The Cancer Centre integrates and develops the cooperation in teaching.
Concrete measures for how to reach the targets
The implementation of the Cancer Centre's strategy progresses by tasks that are
a) to secure a functional organisation between the contracting parties (operating model, resourcing,
facilities, data administration, research, teaching and training as well as communication)
b) to apply for membership and status at the OECI (Organization of European Cancer Institute), and to
initialize the accreditation process
c) to collaborate nationally and to function as the western coordination centre for FICAN (Finland Cancer
Center)
