What Causes Feelings of the Uncanny?
Sigmund Freuds the uncanny is defined as the “unknown”, but there are various
meanings and feelings that are associated to the unknown. The formal definition of the
uncanny is strnage and mysterious especially in an unsetting way and can be associated
with words such as eerie, ghostly and weird. The unknown is often associated with fear
or a feeling of anxiety, but the unknown can also be related to a feeling of mystery.
Sigmund Freud defines the subject of the uncanny as “The subject of the “uncanny” is a
province of this kind. It undoubtedly belongs to all that is terrible—to all that arouses
dread and creeping horror; it is equally certain, too, that the word is [“ is missing here]
not always used in a clearly definable sense, so that it tends to coincide with whatever
excites dread”. Through having feelings related to the uncannty such as dread and fear,
one can question the situation causes feelings of the uncanny. Although the uncanny is
often associated with what is dreadful and strange, can it also relate to feelings of positive
nature. ? Although the feelings of the uncanny are associated with dread and fear, one
can question what kind of situations can cause these feelings.
Though the uncanny is connected to feelings of negativity and unsettling, the
uncanny can also relate to feelings of anxiety. Freud states that the definition of the
uncanny is “not always used in a clearly definable sense, so it tends to coincide with
whatever excites dread”. The uncanny often leads to question what causes this feeling.
Although it is associated with the unknown, it is not associated with the feeling of
surprise and suspense in a positive manner rather it is associated with that of fear and
feelings of distress. Because the uncanny is not a clearly definable word, it can be
associated with feelings of anxiety. For example, someone who is walking alone and does
not know where they are can tend to have an uncanny feeling of unsettleness and anxiety.
Freud uses a similar example stating “The better orientated in his environment a person
is, the less readily will he get the impression of something uncanny in regard to the
objects and events in it”. By one having being somewhere they are not farmilar with or
speaking to someone they are less farmilar with, they are more likely to have feelings
related to the uncanny. The uncanny not only relates to feelings of dread and fear, but can
be relatable to any scenario one is less used to. Not only can it be associated with what
someone is experiencing physically, but it can be associated with what is someone is
experiencing alone mentally. Someone suffering from mental illness such as Obsessive
compulsive disorder or schizophrenia, what the person is feeling as a result of these
disorders can lead to feelings of the uncanny. Feelings of the unknown can often be
associated with fear and anxiety, it can not only affect someone mentally, but also
physically.
Though the uncanny is often associated with the unknown with mysterious and
unsettling feelings, the question arises of what causes one to experience feelings of the
uncanny. The feelings of the uncanny are often related to negative feelings such as fear
and anxiety. Freud states that the definition of the uncanny is not always used in a clearly
definable sense. When one experiences something that is unfamiliar to them or the
presence of someone they are not comfortable with this can cause feelings of anxiety and
unsettling feelings associlated with the uncanny. An example that is used by whom? is a

within the boundaries of what is “fearful.” His statement about the uncanny is related to
what is fearful and the feeling of dread one feels as a result of the uncanny.
