Brazilian Mconf web conferencing supporting research at the South African National Research and Education Network (SA NREN) Presented by Kasandra Pillay SANReN Engineer [email protected] at TNC16 Prague, Czech Republic 1 What is Mconf? • Open source multi-conferencing system that is web based • Can be set up as a room based video conferencing system • Distance education, Remote meetings, Broadcasting events • Based on Big Blue Button web conferencing • Began as a research project at PRAV: Projects in Audio and Video, Brazil • Development funded by Brazilian NREN, RNP • Promoted from TNC2012 • Watched recording of the presentation delivered by Mr Valter Roesler of Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul at TNC2014 and read his poster created for the conference. 2 Success stories in SA Usage this year (to 30-04-2016): • 957 users across 141 meetings Average meetings size: 6 participants Largest meeting: 33 participants • Growing number of logins through • • Main clients: • H3Africa and H3BioNet: 32 Bioinformatics research groups distributed throughout 15 African countries and 2 American partner institutions - Monthly seminars and weekly meetings (UCT involvement) • Keystone Symposia: Molecular and Cellular biology non-profit organisation • Rhodes University: Post graduate meetings between supervisors and students, Class for Creatives and Dramatic Writing students • CSIR: Coastal Systems Advance Mathematical Modelling (CSAMM) workgroup , Emerging Knowledge for Local Adaptation Project (EKLA) • SANBI: South African National Bioinformatics Institute – Combat TB project • Adhoc project meetings Technical Implementation of Mconf 5 servers in South Africa: • 3 x Mconf-Live (back-end : distributed in Cape Town and Pretoria, adding to existing Global Mconf infrastructure) • 1x Mconf-Web (front-end web portal) • 1x Recording Server SA Global network SA Brazil 8 Global Academic Network Summary • The Mconf Global Academic Network is a win-win for everyone • Protection against temporary failure of local server or a traffic surge • Multiple servers supporting the system as a whole • Global Network monitoring by Mconf Technologia 9 Why not join us? http://mconf.org/about/mconfnetwork/
