Contrast the NNIS surveillance components with the NHSN Patient Safety modules, including changes to site and field definitions. Define the impact of the transition from NNIS to NHSN on the comparative data. Define the requirements for participation in NHSN. Identify the education and practice requirements set by the Certification Board of Infection Control (CBIC) in order to qualify to take the CIC exam. Describe how exam questions are developed according to the structure of the Practice Analysis. Explain reasons why obtaining CIC certification is considered valuable. Appreciate the re-emergence of infectious disease as a public health threat. Understand the U.S. system of disease surveillance. Understand the epidemiology of avian influenza. Understand the need for hospital planning for influenza pandemic. Be able to find and utilize guidelines for hospital plans.
