PHY 1042 DETERMINATION OF SPECIFIC HEAT OBJECTIVE: The amount of heat energy that can be transferred to or from a material is dependent on the mass of material, the temperature gradient, and a material property known as its specific heat capacity. The principles of calorimetry will be employed to determine an experimental value for a materials specific heat capacity. PROCEDURE: 1) Determine and record the mass of a) the empty, dry calorimeter cup and stirrer, b) the empty, dry transfer cup 2) Fill the transfer cup with metal shot and reweigh. After it has been weighed place a thermometer in the shot and start heating it with the steam bath. 3) Half fill the calorimeter cup with water and reweigh. 4) When the metal shot has reached a maximum temperature (close to 100oC) record the initial temperature of the metal shot and the water. 5) Add the metal shot to the water in the calorimeter cup, cover and mix the water and shot until a maximum temperature is reached. Record this temperature as Tf. 6) Repeat steps 1-5 two more times. CALCULATIONS: 1. Determine the specific heat constant (Cp) for your metal from the calorimetery expression; 2. Qgained = Qlost 3. (mCpT)Al + (mCpT)water = (mCpT)metal 4. Determine a percent error for each trial by comparing the experimental value to the accepted value. 5. %error = {(exp – accepted)/(accepted)} x 100% 6. Place all calculated values in their appropriate tables 10-Aug-17
