I’d like to invite you to an event being held by the Optegra Manchester Eye Hospital on Saturday
March 28th, the ‘GP Opthalmology Masterclass’.

Mr. Brendan Moriarty – ‘Most Recent Advances in Refractive Eye Surgery’
The lecture will cover a review of the most recent advances in refractive eye surgery including laser,
accommodative lenses, monovision, and multifocal intraocular lenses. There will be a resume of
inclusion and exclusion criteria and videos.

Mr. Moriarty joined Optegra Manchester Eye Hospital in 2012 as a consultant with emphasis on
Telescope Surgery for Macular Degeneration. Mr. Moriarty qualified in medicine from Cambridge
University. He continued his training in ophthalmology while working in Bristol, London, Windsor and St
Paul’s Eye Hospital in Liverpool. In 1987 he was appointed as fellow to the department of Glaucoma at
Moorfield’s Eye Hospital in London.

Mr Felipe Dhawahir-Scala ‘Ocular emergencies’
A 30 minute lecture on Ocular emergencies and when to refer.

Consultant Ophthalmic and Vitreoretinal Surgeon
Mr. Felipe Eduardo Dhawahir-Scala is a Consultant Ophthalmic and Vitreoretinal Surgeon and
the Director of the Acute Ophthalmic Services at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. He qualified
from Madrid Complutense University in Spain and he trained in ophthalmology in the West
Midlands and Northwest of England. He is a scientific reviewer for the Cochrane Eyes and Vision
Group and several international journals and has a long history of research and lecturing. He has
published multiple scientific papers and has given more than 30 presentations at home and
abroad.
Mr. Dhawahir-Scala specialises in surgery and disorders of the posterior (back) segment of the
eye. His area of expertise are retinal surgery, Age related macular degeneration, diabetic eye
disease, complex cataract surgery and acute / urgent ophthalmic diseases.

Mr Niall Patton ‘Management of red eye in primary care’
A 30 minute lecture on Discussion of the differing causes and management of red eyes for the
general practitioner. From conjunctivitis to acute glaucoma.

Consultant Ophthalmologist at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. Mr. Patton is a Consultant
Ophthalmologist, Cataract and Vitreoretinal surgeon. He qualified from Manchester University in
1996 and completed his surgical training in Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Western Australia
and Moorfield’s Eye Hospital London. He was appointed as a consultant at Manchester Royal
Eye Hospital in 2008.

A 30 minute lecture. This presentation is designed to provide a refresher and update on the management
of glaucoma. It will also cover conundrums that GPs may encounter in their day to day glaucoma patient.

Dan Nguyen is a NHS Consultant Ophthalmologist and the Lead Clinician for Glaucoma at Mid Cheshire
Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
After graduating from the University of Bristol Medical School, he gained considerable experience at St.
Paul’s Eye Unit at the Royal Liverpool Hospital, and the Bristol Eye Hospital. He has since completed
advanced specialist Glaucoma fellowships at the Bristol Eye Hospital, and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear
Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.
As well as dealing with the full range of general ophthalmic conditions, he has special interests in
customised cataract surgery, and the assessment, diagnosis, medical and surgical management of all
forms of Glaucoma.
Introduction
Mr. Dan Nguyen joined Optegra Manchester Eye Hospital in April 2013.
Professional
He publishes his research regularly in peer-reviewed medical journals, and lectures in the field of
Ophthalmology. He is a reviewer for several ophthalmic journals, and maintains research interests in
neuroprotection and translational research. He holds an honorary research position at the Centre for Eye
Research Australia (CERA), the University of Melbourne, and is an examiner for the College of
Optometrists.
Dan Nguyen combines his specialist training, clinical experience and research expertise to deliver
dedicated, patient-centred, evidence-based care.
