Science Study Questions: Electricity Unit

Ten of these questions will be on the final test – research and study them all.
Draw a diagram of an atom and label the parts
What does it mean when an atom becomes negatively charged? How can you make this happen?
Explain how an electrical current applied to a regular incandescent bulb makes light and heat.
Explain how a hydroelectric dam uses transformations of energy to create electricity. Label the parts on
the diagram and mark the direction of the flow of energy.
Explain how you used an electrical circuit to find out whether a type of material is a good conductor of
electricity. Give an example of a poorly-conducting material.
Explain why small pieces of paper will stick to a comb after you run it through your hair.
Which electrical appliance in your house converts electric energy into sound, mechanical, heat, and light
energy?
Electrical appliances are energy transformation devices. List the conversions for each one.

Would you rather have your Christmas lights on a parallel circuit or a series circuit? Explain your choice.
I can turn off a lamp in the family room, but the hallway light stays on. How does this happen?
What is the purpose of coating electrical wire with plastic? Explain in detail.
Draw and explain a schematic series circuit diagram that includes two light bulbs, two batteries, and a
switch.
Draw and explain a schematic parallel circuit diagram that includes two light bulbs, two batteries, and a
switch.
What is the efficiency rating (percentage of the electrical energy is converted into useful energy) of a light
bulb in the ceiling? Is this figure the same for a lava lamp or Easy Bake Oven? Explain.
What are the advantages of a hydroelectric power dam over a power station that uses coal or another
fossil fuel to spin the generator?
What is the difference between a closed electrical circuit and an open electrical circuit?
How does a coal-burning plant produce electricity? What is the advantage of a coal-burning plant?
Explain how a toaster generates heat inside the metal box, but not in the plug wire.
How do the penstocks in a dam help to create more power to the turbine?
How does the thickness of a copper wire affect the way it conducts electricity? Make your own hypothesis,
and design a simple experiment to test it. Use the experiment form sheet (next page).

I wanted to find out ____________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
My hypothesis: ________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
I used these materials:
___________________________
__________________________
___________________________
__________________________
___________________________

These were the steps of the experiment:
1.
___________________________________________________________________
2.
___________________________________________________________________
3.
___________________________________________________________________
4.
___________________________________________________________________
5.
___________________________________________________________________
I controlled these variables:
_______________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________
This is what happened (results):

___________________________________________________________________________
I decided that (conclusions: revisit your question and hypothesis):
