Overview
CeramiSphere is a recently incorporated, 100% owned subsidiary of the Australian Nuclear Science
and Technology Organisation (ANSTO). CeramiSphere is actively seeking commercial partners to
develop and market products using its proprietary encapsulation and controlled release technology for
specific market applications.
Encapsulation and Controlled Release of Active Molecules
ANSTO has developed an expertise in ceramic nanoparticles for encapsulation and controlled release
of active molecules, patenting the base technology in 2001. The size of the nanostructured particles
can be tailored from 10 nanometres to 100 microns. The release rate can be independently controlled
from hours to months.
Initially this technology was limited to the encapsulation of small hydrophilic molecules, however, it has
recently been expanded to include hydrophobic molecules including hydrophobic oils, biomolecules
(including enzymes and DNA) and sequential release technology.
Potential applications for this platform technology include delivery of drugs, active ingredients in
personal care and cosmetic products, flavour and fragrance encapsulation in food processing, and
controlled release of speciality chemicals such as biocides and pesticides for uses in paints and
coatings.
Key Advantages of CeramiSphere Technologies
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Ambient temperature encapsulation of active molecules inside a ceramic matrix
Release rates which can be tailored to specific applications (from mg/hr to mg/month)
Variable particle size, from 10nm to 100 µm
Particle size and release rate which can be independently varied
A ceramic matrix: chemical protection, biocompatible, inert and readily adaptable to most active
ingredients
Controlled release of hydrophilic and hydrophobic molecules
Controlled release of biomolecules including enzymes and DNA
Sequential and “delayed” release
