Green coffee carbon footprint calculation:
Towards a globally recognised standard
Project title: Development of Product Category Rules for the
calculation of the carbon footprint of green coffee
Why the project?
•
•
•
•
•
The coffee sector is very active in environmental issues related to coffee production.
Methods of measuring the emissions of green house gases from the green coffee value chain vary
considerably and as such provide varied results.
Common methods are essential for the coffee sector to be ‘speaking the same language’ when
sharing and comparing GHG mitigation programmes.
Clear outputs of quantification activities is essential for informed decisions to be made .
The Driver is not labelling – It is about better understanding and continuous improvement
quantifiably.
Who is driving the process?
•
•
Sustainable Agriculture Initiative Platform (SAI Platform: ) Coffee Working Group is collaborating
with The Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH) in order to deliver this project
The Steering Group for the project is Tchibo, Illy Cafe, D.E Master Blenders 1753, Mondelēz
International and Lavazza.
How is the project delivered?
•
•
•
•
As the project is being developed for the entire Green Coffee sector, the associated process is
totally transparent.
Teams of interested stakeholders collaborate to ensure that every level of the supply chain has the
opportunity to contribute to the developmental process should they wish.
The project is seeking pragmatic solutions to the lack of data availability so it is not a barrier to the
delivery of the PCR process.
The PCR development seeks a sensible balance between scientific robustness of the outputs and
practical delivery.
What is the timeline?
