Course Placement
Please go to our website and download the copy of Course program guide to assist you in
course selection. It can be found under the Academic Tab>Available Courses
Science Placement
The Science Department Chairperson will look at your middle school math grades, High School
Placement Test Scores, and Algebra Examination score to determine which introductory
course will offer you the strongest start to your high school academic career. Your science
course placement will be indicated on the course schedule you receive. The three subject
options open to ninth grade students are Principles of Matter and Energy, Biology 1, and
Biology 1 Honors.*
*Students who have a High School Placement Test and composite national average of 85% or
higher and qualify for English or Math Honors will receive an invitation for Biology 1 Honors
Math Placement
A committee of Bishop O’Connell math teachers will look at the your courses from seventh
and eighth grade math in addition to scores from the High School Placement Test to place you
in the appropriate ninth grade course.
Students who have taken a full year of Algebra 1 take the Algebra exemption test. Basic
Algebra, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra 1 Part 1 do NOT count as a year of Algebra 1.
The test will be given July 17 at 9 a.m. You need to register by sending an email to
[email protected], including student’s name and phone number.
Information to prepare for the test can be found at bishopoconnell.org/admit
English Placement
The English Department looks forward to welcoming you to Bishop O’Connell in the fall. The
books you read depend on your course placement. Students who have a High School
Placement Test composite national percentile of 87% or above will receive an invitation to
take the English Honors qualifying test. The honors test consists of reading comprehension,
vocabulary, literary analysis, and a writing sample.
Summer Reading List
English 1(1100)
Left to Tell by Immaculee Ilibagiza
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
You should annotate their books as they read and take notes for their own benefit, paying
special attention to plot, characters, setting and theme.
English 1 Honors (1150)
The Chosen by Chaim Potok
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Mythology by Edith Hamilton
You should annotate their books as they read and take notes for their own benefit, paying
special attention to plot, characters, setting and theme.
For Mythology students must complete the following assignment. It must be word processed
and limited to four pages demonstrating ability to summarize.
Assignment:
A) Paraphrase the main ideas from the Introduction, focusing on the “Greek Miracle.” It is
important that you annotate and underline as you read (pages 3-15)
B) In Part One create a list to be used as a study guide containing the main gods and goddesses
(both Latin and Greek names), their characteristics, their symbols, and their stories associated
with them (pages 21-37)
C) In Part Four, write a paragraph each about the Trojan War, the Fall of Troy, and the
Adventures of Odysseus; we will pursue these stories in greater detail when we read The
Odyssey in the first quarter (pages 255-318)
World Language Placement
In order to determine the appropriate level of the world language you should take, a
placement test is given. The test is only required if you desire placement in the second or third
year of a language. If you are switching to a new language you do not need to take the test.
Please select the desired language and level on the Green Placement Form.
Students enrolled in a school in the Arlington Diocese will have already taken the language
placement test. A recommendation form will be completed by your teacher and submitted to
Bishop O’Connell on your behalf. You do not need to provide the teacher with the
recommendation form.
Students enrolled in a public, private or otherwise non-Diocesan school must contact the
Admissions Office in order to schedule a test. Please also download the Language Teacher
Recommendation Form at bishopoconnell.org/admit and request your language teacher
submit the completed form to the address noted.
Students who are native speakers of Spanish or if Spanish is the primary language at home
must take a written and oral evaluation. Please contact the Admissions Office in order to
schedule both tests. This evaluation allows teachers to properly place students in courses
designed for Spanish speakers.
Credit for a high school level course taken in the eighth grade will appear on the Bishop
O’Connell transcript with the name of the school at which the course was taken. The grade
received does not count toward the Bishop O’Connell grade point average nor does the credit
count toward fulfillment of credits for graduation. It does provide you with the ability to
register for advanced placement in the selected world language.
For assistance in the selection of courses, please note there is a course selection guide on our
website. It can be found under the Academic Tab>Available Courses
