What do we do?
Carmofon Lab aims at understanding the emergence of multicellular organization in
health and disease. More specifically, we are interested in processes of self-organization
in cancer and stem cell differentiation. We take an innovative approach where we borrow
conceptual frameworks from developmental biology and ecology which we apply to
problems such as spatial patterning of tumors and collective decision-making in cells.
Our previous investigations have revealed a crucial role for extracellular
metabolites in the orchestration of multicellular organization. To study this, we are
developing methods to measure and manipulate intra- and extra-cellular metabolites that
we combine with quantitative cell biology, live microscopy and computational methods
such as image processing and modeling. We are also implementing techniques including
culture of cell organoids, 3D printing, microfluidics, liquid handling robots and highthroughput imaging in order to comprehensibly address our research goals.
What are we looking for?
We seek to hire outstanding, motivated and committed scientists to work with us. The
successful candidate will have a PhD in cell/cancer/developmental biology, immunology,
or experimental physics. Independence, creativity, and passion for science are essential.
We have several projects on topics that include:
Symmetry breaking in tumor formation
Cooperation & competition in the tumor microenvironment and in immunotherapy
Self-organization in stem cell differentiation
Collective cell migration and chemotaxis
