DIRECTOR’S REPORT
Cardiovascular sciences has a rich and illustrious history at the University of Toronto.
In order to further encourage graduate training in such a rich environment, the
Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program (CSCP) was officially established and
recognized by Governing Council in 1992. Since then the CSCP continues to receive
resounding endorsement by the Ontario Council of Graduate Schools. Just this past
year, we underwent our 5-year School of Graduate Studies review where the Review
Committee unanimously recognized the significant contribution of the Program to the
University of Toronto and graduate training as a whole. Its interdisciplinary nature and
the fact that faculty and student research crosses the pillars of the CIHR as well as the
departments across a number of faculties makes this a truly model Program at the
University of Toronto. In keeping with this model, I would like to welcome our newest
member of the Program, the Department of Health Policy, Management & Evaluation.
I am proud to present this Annual Report that summarizes the achievements of the
Program’s students and faculty over the past academic year.
Administrative
The Executive Committee was restructured into a number of portfolios (described
below) where key faculty was recruited to assist and contribute with the expanding level
of Program activities allowing us to better serve our constituents. The Chairs of these
various subcommittees form the Executive Committee.
Scholarships & Awards Subcommittee (Chair: Dr. Margaret Rand)
Mandate: To oversee and adjudicate the various awards given out by the CSCP.
Dr. Rand has significant experience in this area as she recently finished a term as Chair
of the Grants Allocation Committee of the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario.
Curriculum Subcommittee (Chair: Dr. Scott Thomas)
Mandate: To review status of graduate courses available to CSCP students;
recommend and implement any upgrades and/or new courses with cardiovascular
content; suggest any additional seminars of CME; integrate existing activities by other
departments into CSCP curriculum.
Dr. Thomas is an experienced teacher and supervisor with a strong appreciation of
graduate training.
Membership Subcommittee (Chair: Dr. Richard Weisel)
Mandate: To review and ensure that all appropriate and interested faculty are offered
the opportunity to join the CSCP; review faculty status (renewals and appointment
levels).
Dr. Weisel is one of our senior respected faculty who, as a world renowned scientist and
surgeon, offers his expertise to our growth.
Student Affairs Subcommittee (Chair: Dr. Lee Adamson)
Mandate: To ensure student satisfaction and promote student activities; link the student
group with the Program’s mandate; focus on student recruitment and associated
initiatives.
Dr. Adamson, another of our senior scientists, is well respected by the student body and
has years of graduate training experience.
Fundraising Subcommittee (Chair: Dr. Carin Wittnich)
Mandate: To explore and develop strategies to generate funds to support the CSCP
with a goal of stable infrastructure in 5 years.
Dr. Wittnich, as Founding director, has developed industry ties over the years in support
of the CSCP and will pursue this initiative with the assistance of connected CSCP
faculty and advisors.
The Executive Committee meets regularly to guide and promote the CSCP. This has
greatly contributed to the progress and growth the Program has made over the past
year and has ensured that this momentum continues.
Students
In this academic year we had 25 Masters and 15 PhD trainees active in the Program
(see graph below). We also had a number of our trainees who completed and
convocated. The PhD category was counterbalanced by new recruits and transfer
students while at the MSc level convocated numbers and students that transferred to
PhD exceeded the enrolment numbers, thus resulting in an apparent plateau. We will
be pursuing student recruitment with a number of initiatives in the upcoming year.

The Student Committee continues to lead and drive Program student activities.
Specifically, their mandate is to (1) enhance trainee interaction through the organization
of both academic and social events and (2) to provide trainees with the tools to make
informed decisions about their graduate work in the form of mentoring and course
assessments. It is clear that the student body has established significant momentum
and they continue to expand in order to optimize participation and involve as many of
their colleagues as possible. They continue to organize a very successful “Annual
Student Research Day”, hold various social functions, and run the “Student Forum and
Dinner”. A new idea, Circulation Rounds, was established that features the research
programs of our individual faculty who host the event. Details can be found in the main
body of this report.
Our annual student interviews continue to show a high degree of satisfaction with the
Program. The increase in events targeted specifically for students resulted in more
effective student participation. The post-graduate follow-up illustrated that, once again,
the students have gone on to pursue either academic or research careers (see
Convocated section). As part of our ongoing tradition, bound copies of each graduating
student’s thesis is kept in the Program office (total: 35 MSc/MaSc and 13 PhD).
Student information on the web site continues to expand and we now also maintain
pictures and small bios of each active Program student.
Congratulations to the Student Committee, and in particular Ms. Kirsteen Burton, for
their hard work in successfully getting recognized as a Student Group. Plans are in the
works to become an official Student Association.
With such an enthusiastic and diverse group of students, it continues to be very exciting
to follow their initiatives!
Education
The JCV 3060H/3061H/3062H/3063H courses underwent a review by the Curriculum
Committee and they agreed that the ongoing and frequent course reviews continues to
ensure that leading edge technologies and research foci are represented. This is
considered critical if they are to continue to serve as our flagship courses for our
trainees. Enrolment continues to be strong in these courses and their popularity is
reflected in the strong student reviews. As well, the courses are more web-friendly with
outlines and seminar notes (password protected) available for downloading by students
registered in the courses.
Financial
Our efforts continue to be successful in increasing our endowment as well as raising
funds for student travel, bursaries and other student related activity. For example, the
Medtronic Travel Award makes it possible for students to attend scientific meetings and
present their work and the OSOTF bursary provides much needed financial relief to
deserving students. However, a stable infrastructure that is critical for continued
development, continues to elude us. In order to position the Program to be as
successful as possible in this venture, participating departments and faculties have
agreed to provide bridging funds. This also serves to reinforce to potential donors that
this is an extremely important initiative at the University.
A new sponsor is welcomed to the CSCP corporate family, Biovail Pharmaceuticals.
Our sponsors are to be recognized, once again, for their outstanding annual support of
education in the cardiovascular sciences at the University of Toronto.
Summary
As you continue to read through this report, you will see that the Program continues to
grow and enrich our trainee’s experiences. Specific details on all activities can be found
on our web site at www.cscp.utoronto.ca. I would like to once again recognize the
outstanding efforts of Miss Victoria Simpson, our Business Officer, for her hard work
and contribution that has made the Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program the
success it is today.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our faculty and students for
another successful year and to those individuals who have continued to provide both
moral and tangible support for this Program.

MISSION STATEMENT
“The Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program, approved by the University and
Ontario Council on Graduate Studies in 1992, and listed in the calendar of the School of
Graduate Studies, exists to give formal, organized expression to cardiovascular studies
and research at the graduate level. It builds on the strengths of all participating
academic units, and other agencies, to enhance the visibility of cardiovascular studies
and to facilitate collaborative, interdisciplinary training and research.”
The above mission is achieved by advertising and promoting the importance of, and
opportunities in, cardiovascular studies, by making known the results of such studies, by
recruitment of excellent students, and by coordinating the graduate collaborative
program in cooperation with the academic units in which they are registered. Students
in this collaborative program must fulfill the requirements of their home units as well as
the Program. Upon graduation the notation “Specialization in Cardiovascular Sciences”
will appear on the student’s academic transcript and the Program will present the
student with a certificate and gift.

Kulandavelu (member), and Ali Pourdjabbar. The committee also gratefully
acknowledges the educational grant from Aventis Pharma and the support of Ms.
Victoria Simpson in making this a very successful day. Congratulations!
Student Forum Night
The first CSCP Student Forum and Dinner event was held on Tuesday, December 3,
2002 in the Debates Room of Hart House. The primary objective of this event was to
provide students in the CSCP program and potential CSCP recruits with an informal
evening of friendly and
informative sharing
of ideas and views that
affect them. The
evening began at
5:30pm. The
Student Committee
members were
introduced to the
student body by
Nathalie Lapointe, the
senior student
representative at the
time, followed by
the introduction and
proposal of the two
forum topics by the
Chair of Student
Forum, Renee Suen.
The two topics that
were proposed were: Science vs. Religion and the need for MCAT examination, and the
equivalent to enter into professional school. The topic of MCAT requirement was
selected by majority of the students and was moderated by the Chair, who stimulated
discussion and participation by asking questions. All students had to give their own
point of view. The presence and the participation of the students from the program was
excellent. At 7:00pm the Chair concluded the evening’s program and the students were
invited to take a short break prior to the dinner. The evening concluded around 8:30pm.
There is no doubt regarding the success of this event, as the feedback obtained from
student evaluation forms collected was exceptional. Congratulations to Renee Suen for
making this an outstanding event.
Human Biology Student Union Career Fair
The Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program participated in the Human Biology
Undergraduate Student Association Career Fair on November 21, 2002. Various
graduate programs had displays and students in the Collaborative Program manned a
table and provided information to interested future graduate students.
Summer Program
This year’s Annual Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program summer program
was a definite success. Student talks ranged from women’s health, sleep apnea, and
heart/organ transplantation to the effects of sex on cardiac development. Also this year,
we incorporated a number of field trips and guest speakers into the program that
enhanced the student’s summer experience. Our first guest speaker was Dr. Bhalerao,
a staff psychiatrist at St. Michael’s Hospital, who spoke on the psychological effects of
myocardial infarction in a variety of patient populations. His informal, integrative
question-based approach to the talk was very enjoyable. Our second guest speaker
was Dr. Margaret Rand, a researcher from the Hospital for Sick Children, who gave the
students an excellent, informative talk on platelets and their role in coagulation
homeostasis and vascular pathology. The summer’s first field trip was to the Toronto
Rehabilitation Institute’s Cardiac Centre (Rumsey Centre). The students sat in on an
introduction/orientation session with new patients and received a tour of the facility. In
addition, they also got the opportunity to meet and interact with the patients about their
experiences and got a first hand look at the benefits of cardiac rehabilitation. Our next
field trip was to Biovail Pharmaceuticals’ Research and Development Centre. This trip
provided the students a behind the scene insight into drug development, drug marketing
and the ordeals companies face before their drugs are approved. It also provided the
students information about future employment opportunities in pharmaceutical research
and drug development. This program is highly successful and with the addition of field
trips, it was enjoyed by all who participated.

Bigelow Book Prize
This prize was established in 1995 by the Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative
Program to recognize and honor a pioneer clinician and scientist in the field of
cardiovascular sciences. Awardees should exemplify the personal traits of Dr. Bigelow curiosity, drive, and scientific integrity. The award is given in every year that a qualified
student is identified. Qualifications include sustained academic scientific excellence,
innovative experimental approaches, original discoveries and good scientific
productivity. Some weight is given to work that has recognizable clinical relevance,
especially that which promises to improve patient care. The Bigelow Book Prize
consists of 2 books written by Dr. W.G. Bigelow entitled “Cold Hearts” and “Mysterious
Heparin” and a keeper plaque created to honor Dr. Bigelow. Appropriate candidates
were identified and the final decision was made by the Program Committee.
1995 – Dr. John S. Ikonomidis
1996 – Ms. Shona M. Torrance
1997 – Dr. Vivek Rao
1998 – Dr. Bryce Cowan
1999 – Dr. Gideon Cohen
2000 – Dr. Michael Borger

2003 – Dr. Paul W.M. Fedak
L-R: Dr. Carin Wittnich, Dr.
Richard Weisel (Supervisor), Dr.
Wilfred Bigelow, Dr. Paul Fedak
Dr. Fedak is dedicated toward a career as an academic cardiac surgeon with a focus on
developing novel therapeutic approaches to treat patients with congestive heart failure.
His PhD thesis outlines an important role for TIMP-3 as a key regulator of the
remodeling process in the failing heart and he is now focused on translating these novel
findings into experimental gene and cell therapies for patients with heart failure. His
other research interests include the pathophysiology and treatment of bicuspid aortic
valve disease, endothelial dysfunction during allograft preservation for transplantation,
and the mechanisms underlying the benefits of cell transplantation for cardiac
dysfunction.
This award is presented at the Annual Student Research Day and we are extremely
pleased the Dr. Bigelow continues to participate in the award ceremony and interacts
with the trainees.
Lorne Phenix Graduate Award
This award was made possible by a generous donation in the memory of Mr. Lorne
Phenix by Mrs. Geraldine Phenix. It is her hope that this award will focus attention on
the issue of heart disease – which is still the #1 killer of both men and women in
Canada. In addition, women who have heart problems are at least equal if not at
greater risk than men and Mrs. Phenix hopes that this award will serve to encourage
trainees to pursue this area of research to address this particular problem. It is awarded
to a graduate student in the Faculty of Medicine on the basis of research and academic
excellence. The award consists of a cash prize and certificate and is presented to the
recipient at the Annual Student Research Day. Appropriate candidates are identified
and a winner is selected by a subcommittee chaired by Dr. Donna Stewart. This award
is presented at the Annual Student Research Day.
2001 – Wm. Jack Wallen, PhD
2002 – Wm. Jack Wallen, PhD
Dr. Carin Wittnich (Supervisor),
Jack Wallen
Jack Wallen is a PhD candidate in the Department of Physiology, University of Toronto,
working in the laboratory of Dr. Carin Wittnich. His research focuses on the role of
gender on development of myocardial pathology. Initial work found that female rats had
significantly higher baseline glycogen levels in both myocardium and liver than agematched males (Am J Clin Nutr 1997). As well, females had a greater degree of
myocardial hypertrophy, in both the presence and absence of systemic hypertension
(Hypertension 2000). This response was dependent on the hormone status of the
animals and for any given diastolic pressure, females always exhibited greater
hypertrophy. More recent published evidence shows that steroid hormones exert
dramatic gender dependent effects on whole-body metabolism in both normotensive (J
Nutr 2001) and hypertensive rats (J Nutr 2002). The work to date has identified
significant gender differences which could increase female risk in the presence of heart
disease.
Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Funds (OSOTF) Award
The OSOTF award refers to a class of awards that have resulted from the Ontario
government’s “matching” program. Under the program every dollar of donation received
for student assistance has been matched by the government as well as the university
on a dollar-for-dollar basis. The Cardiovascular Sciences Collaborative Program
participates in this program. There are two major conditions for all OSOTF awards;
recipients must be Ontario residents and demonstrate financial need. However, the
Program has additional eligibility criteria that must be adhered to, including excellence
in science and academic performance. One competition is held per academic year.
The applications are handled centrally through the Office of the Associate Dean, InterFaculty and Graduate Affairs. Applications pertaining to the CSCP are sent to us and
are then adjudicated by a subcommittee chaired by Dr. Margaret Rand. Committee
recommendations are then forwarded to the OSOTF Awards Committee (Faculty of
Medicine). This year’s recipient was Ms. Kirsteen Burton, MSc, Public Health Sciences
(Supervisor: Dr. George Tomlinson)
Ontario Graduate School Science and Technology (OGSST)
The OGSST program is designed to encourage excellence in graduate studies in
science and technology. The program is supported through funds provided by the
Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and by funds raised by the University of
Toronto and the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario. To be awarded to graduate
students at the University of Toronto who are pursuing cardiovascular/stroke research.
Students must have maintained an overall A- average over the last two years of study at
the post-secondary level and exhibit research ability/potential, good communication
skills and interpersonal/leadership abilities.
