McKenzie Electric Cooperative (MEC), a member-owned rural electric distribution cooperative
located at the heart of the Bakken Oil play, has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic leader to
fill the newly created position of Human Resources Director. MEC has retained NRECA’s
Executive Search to facilitate the search process.
The successful candidate will establish the overall direction for planning, development,
implementation, and administration of all personnel programs. This includes recruitment,
retention, compensation, benefits, performance management, employee relations,
employment equity programs, labor relations, payroll administration, worker’s compensation,
job descriptions, employee training, and benefits education programs. The Human Resources
Director is an important member of the Senior Management Team and reports directly to the
General Manager.
A Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Administration, Business Administration or related
field with a concentration in Human Resource Management is required with at least seven (7)
years’ human resources experience. Must possess knowledge of employment and benefit laws
and human resource management principles, practices and procedures. PHR or SPHR
certification preferred. The candidate should demonstrate initiative, self-motivation, and
favorable attitude and be capable of effectively communicating with the public and employees,
both orally and in writing.
Due to the booming Bakken oil formation area of North Dakota, MEC is growing in the number
of employees, membership, and revenue. It employs 50 individuals and serves more than
10,100 meters in portions of five counties in western North Dakota and two eastern counties in
Montana. Annual revenues are in excess of $120 million.
MEC’s headquarters is located in Watford City, a community of 3,300 and the County Seat of
McKenzie County, North Dakota. Hometown pride and visionary spirit drive the residents of this
progressive ranching community. Surrounded by lakes, rivers, grassland and the Theodore
Roosevelt National Park, Watford City is the connection to many area attractions and ample
recreational opportunities. Watford City is also host to a golf course, hospital, clinic, health club
and many new businesses and shopping opportunities.
