Brief Outline of the Department
Department of Biophysics, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi was
established on February 28, 1962 to carry out research in front-line areas of
medicine and modem biology and contribute in the teaching of various courses
such as B.Sc. (Hons in Human Biology), M.Sc. (Biophysics), M.D.(Biophysics)
and Ph.D.(Biophysics). It started with faculty strength of 4 and 2 senior
scientists/Technical Officers. It has now grown into a full fledged department with
8 faculty members and 5 scientist positions.
Teaching and Research Activities
The department is involved in various teaching programmes such as B.Sc.
(Hons) Human Biology, M.B.B.S., M.Sc., M.D. and Ph.D. So far, the department
has produced approximately 100 Ph.Ds, 58 M.Ds, 48 M.Sc., and 45 B.Sc
(Human Biology) degrees. The research programmes involve a wide range of
projects in basic and applied disciplines of Biophysics. The current focus of the
research is on structure determination of proteins and ligand design leading to
structure-based drug discovery. The most recent programme initiated by the
department is on clinical proteomics that aims at identification of accurate
molecular markers for various pathological conditions and detailed
characterization of various proteins present in human body fluids and sera as
potential targets for drug design. The department has a strong programme in
molecular modeling and medical bioinformatics. The proteomics facility is also
being used to examine the variations in the concentrations of various
biomolecules after applying the reflexology effects.
Facilities created
The department has created the following facilities under the FIST programme:
1. Real time kinetics: BlACore -2000 system for carrying out a real-time
kinetics and for determining the binding constants of various ligands with
protein targets.
2. Protein Purification System: AKTA Purifier-10 it is being used for high
throughput purification work of proteins and peptides.
