ABSTRACT Stapbylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli are two of the bacteria that can be found living as symbiont in the host body but are also known to cause serious disease. Staphylococcus aureus is found living symbiotically on the host skins and is responsible for causing skin disease such as boil. Escherichia coli is a bacterium that is found living symbiotically in the host gastrointestinal tract. The inhibitory effect of garlic extract and antibiotics was investigated against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The main aim was to investigate the effectiveness of garlic extract and antibiotic against the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . Two plates were spread with the inoculums of the two bacterial strains. Garlic bulb was crushed and diluted with 5rnl of sterile water. Antibiotic weighing 10rng of Arnoxil and Kanamycine were diluted with 1ml of sterile water and water was used as a control. Sterilized discs were dipped into each of the preparations. The discs were then arranged in the inoculated plates and incubated at 37°C for 24hours. It was found that both antibiotics and garlic extract inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Arnoxil shown to be the most sensitive on both the bacterial strains which was followed by garlic extract with Kanamycine which was less sensitive. Antibacterial nature of garlic extract was reported due to the action of allicin. The highest zone of inhibition was observed on amoxil.
