Prof. Samir El-Masri, PhD
Professor of Information Systems
Director of Software Engineering
Prof. El-Masri received his electronic engineering degree from the Lebanese
University (1993) and his Master’s degree (1994) and PhD (1997) from Grenoble
National Polytechnic Institute, France. He worked at Hokkaido University, Japan
from 1998 till 2001 as a researcher and senior project manager and he was
assistant/associate professor at University of Western Sydney and University of
Sydney, Australia from 2001 till 2006. Prof. El-Masri worked in the IT industry as a senior project/program
manager in leading IT consulting companies in Sydney Australia from 2006 till 2009. Prof El-Masri was
associate professor then full professor, senior eHealth industry consultant and the head of the eHealth and
medical informatics research team from 2009 till 2014 at the college of computer and information sciences,
King Saud University, Riyadh, KSA. He worked on large eHealth projects with several grants from KACST in
Saudi Arabia. He has more than 100 published research papers in international journals, books and
conferences. Prof. El-Masri joined GE Healthcare in 2014 as a director of eHealth education for the Eastern
and African Growth Markets region and then in 2015 he became a Senior Engineering Manager then Senior
Director for industrial Internet and digital projects for GE Oil & Gas in MENAT region. Prof El-Masri speaks
fluently English, French, Arabic and Japanese.
Industrial Internet of Things, New Technology Revolution
The new emerging technologies of Big Data, Analytics, Data Science, Machine Learning and
Industrial Internet of Things are changing the world of business and industry as well as our
lives. These technologies will connect 50 Billion industrial assets by 2020 and add to the world
GDP $17 Trillion by 2030. Data science has become the most important discipline in the 21st
century, and there will be a shortage of 2 Million data scientists in US by 2018. The talk will
demonstrate the benefits and applications of these new promising technologies to several
industries including healthcare, Oil & Gas, Aviation, Power and others.
