What are the needs and wants? What are the prior solutions to this problem? o Justify the problem Is the problem worth solving? o Create design requirements (specifications) What are the constraints or limitations that must be followed? o Create a design brief or written plan that identifies a problem to be solved, its criteria, and its constraints Note: If the problem is not valid or justifiable, a new problem must be defined. 2. Investigate, Research and Generate Ideas o Research past solutions o Brainstorm possible new solutions o Consider additional design goals that could enhance the design o Analyze each suggested solution or model by creating a chart comparing the pros and cons of each (a decision–matrix) o Select an approach Note: If the technology necessary to develop the solution does not exist scientific research may be necessary to pursue a solution. 3. Develop a Solution o Create a detailed design solution Develop detailed sketches of the solution if applicable Determine specific materials and supplies needed Determine how and when each step of the solution will be accomplished and who will work on each step. o Justify the design solution Note: If a solution is found to be invalid or cannot be justified, return to the previous step in the design process. 4. Construct and Test a Prototype o Construct a testable prototype o Plan prototype testing Test prototype for performance, usability, and durability o Test prototype Collect test data Analyze test data Note: If a testable prototype cannot be built or test data analysis indicates a flawed design, return to a previous step of the design process. 5. Evaluate the Solution o Evaluate solution effectiveness Does the solution solve the problem? o Reflect on design Recommend improvements o Optimize/Redesign the solution Make adjustments to the design where needed Note: Return to prior design steps and redesign if results are unsatisfactory 6. Present the Solution o Present oral presentations. o Develop a project portfolio and written reports if required. o Use the solution to actually solve the problem or model the process. Design Process: Diabetes Example Worksheet Note that the design process is a guideline for thinking about design. You do not need to address every bullet point at each step for every project. Complete the steps that make sense given the overall need and requirements of the final project. 7. Define Problem o A group of newly diagnosed diabetics need a 3-D visual model that demonstrates the function of insulin in the body. Design, build, and use this model to show the relationship between insulin and glucose in regulating sugar levels in the body and to show the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. o Design requirements for the model are listed below: The model must be constructed of materials easily accessible at home or school. The model must be 3-D with moveable parts. The model should be labeled clearly. The materials must be approved by the teacher. The model must accurately show the role of insulin as it relates to glucose in the body. The model must accurately depict the role of the following terms in blood sugar regulation: o Glucose transport proteins o Cell membrane o Glucose o Blood o Cell o Insulin o Insulin receptors o NOTE: In this case, a full design brief is not necessary. 8. Investigate, Research, and Generate Ideas This project does not require research on past solutions. Focus on investigating the science behind the model as well as generating ideas for the design of the model. You may already have notes about the science behind the model in your laboratory journal. 9. Develop a Solution Create a sketch/draft of your model. Get your teacher’s approval before constructing your model. 10. Construct and Test a Prototype NOTE: In this case, test to see if your model works. There is no data to analyze. 11. Evaluate the Solution NOTE: Evaluate whether your model can be used to accomplish the overall goal. Return to prior design steps and redesign if results are unsatisfactory. 12.
