Transcription/Translation Flipbook
Description: Use a drawing program (such as powerpoint) to create a segment of DNA and show the processes of
transcription and translation by “stepping” through the movement of the molecules through the cell to create a
protein. Each step is drawn and described with labeling of all molecules and procedures throughout. In the end, the
project product will illustrate through animation the process of protein synthesis. Total 50 points.
Checklist of requirements (points):
Basic requirements:
o mRNA strand is long enough to form at least 5 amino acids plus a stop codon (1)
o Verbal summary or protein synthesis (1)
Transcription:
o Zooming into the cell nucleus (1)
o RNA polymerase binding into DNA double helix (1)
o RNA polymerase unwinding the double helix (1)
o RNA polymerase adding complementary nucleotides (1)
o mRNA strand “breaking off” template strand (1)
o DNA double helix reforming (1)
o Brief description on slides for the above actions (6)
o Labels used:
o Cell nucleus (1)

Translation:
o mRNA within the cytoplasm (1)
o Large and small subunits of a ribosome binding with mRNA (1)
o Ribosome beginning at the “start” codon (1)
o tRNA molecule with correct anti-codon binding onto codon (1)
o Adjacent tRNA molecule with correct anti-codon (1)
o Amino acids attaching to one a other via a peptide bond as tRNA “falls off” (1)
o Ribosome ending translation at the “stop” codon (1)
o Amino acid chain folding into tertiary structure (1)
o Brief description on slides for the above actions (8)
