Alzheimer’s Research UK - Drug Discovery Institute:
Research Associate (Molecular Biologist)
The newly formed Alzheimer’s Research UK Drug Discovery Institute (ARUK UCL DDI),
located at University College London (UCL), is part of a network of world class Drug Discovery
Institutes, with the goal of finding new treatments for neurodegenerative disease. As part of
the Institute of Neurology it will be integrated into the world-renowned UCL Neuroscience
community and will have full access to the leading Cell Biology and Chemistry expertise within
the UCL campus. Lead academic scientists supporting the activities of the ARUK UCL DDI
are Institute of Neurology Professors Giampietro Schiavo, John Hardy and Bart de Strooper.
A molecular biologist is sought to join this exciting and novel initiative. As part of the
Neurodegeneration Biology group of the ARUK UCL DDI, you will have a key role in target
validation activities. You will also provide core molecular and cellular biology capabilities to
the Institute. You will use molecular and cellular biology techniques towards developing novel
in vitro models to enable further target investigation and validation, and also the development
of assays to support compound screening.
Applicants should have a PhD level in a relevant scientific area and a BSc in Biological
Sciences, with research experience in molecular and cellular biology. Strength in the
techniques of molecular biology and cellular biology at the practical and theoretical level is
essential; these may include experience of molecular biology techniques such as qPCR,
cloning and cDNA manipulation, plasmid construction, generation of recombinant cell lines
and the generation and expression of recombinant proteins. A track record in the field, as
demonstrated by publications and presentations at conference is also a requirement.
The post is available immediately and is funded by a grant from ARUK for the period to August
2020 in the first instance. Starting salary on the UCL Grade 7 scale in the range £33,686 £40,716 per annum including London Allowance, superannuable.
You should apply for this post through UCL's online recruitment – http://www.ucl.ac.uk/hr/jobs
where you can download a job description and person specification using ref: 1530235.
If you have any queries regarding the application process, please contact Samantha
Robinson, Personnel Officer, Institute of Neurology (email: [email protected]). More
information on the post or Alzheimer’s Research UK UCL Drug Discovery Institute is available
from Prof Paul Whiting (email: [email protected])
Closing date for applications: 18th January 2016
We particularly welcome female applicants and those from an ethnic minority, as they are
under-represented within UCL at this level.
