Genetic counselling is of two types, that is prospective and retrospective.
It offers advice to improve genetic constitution.
Prospectively:
Couples who are genetically at risk can consult the doctor before they produce their first
affected child. Unmarried heterozygote carriers may risk marry heterozygote. For the
already married, termination of pregnancy could be done if there is any unfavourable
diagnosis.
Retrospectively:
Couples are encouraged to report voluntarily after birth-child. The genetic experts will
explain risk about the further pregnancies and discuss with them, backing up with the
prenatal diagnosis.
