DATE OF AVAILABILITY: starts as soon as possible, for 3 years.
SALARY: from the foundation FINOVI, 2100-2300 € /month (net salary).
JOB TITLE: molecular and cellular studies of two new ABC transporters of Streptococcus
pneumoniae : a possible link between virulence and multidrug resistance.
POSITION OPENED: This position will involve two teams of the Institute for Structural
Biology (IBS) in Grenoble, with complementary expertises: one headed by Jean-Michel Jault
and involved in the study of bacterial multidrug transporters and one headed by Thierry
Vernet and specialized in the biology of Streptococcus pneumoniae.
JOB DESCRIPTION: MultiDrug Resistance (MDR) is an increasingly challenging problem
in the biomedical field and is widespread from tumour cells to microbes. In bacteria,
resistance to multiple antibiotics is often associated with the presence of MDR pumps and
some of them belong to the largest superfamily of membrane proteins, the ABC (“ATPBinding Cassette”) transporters, which includes some human members whose dysfunction is
involved in severe pathologies (cancer, cystic fibrosis, adrenoleukodystrophy…). This project
will focus on two new ABC transporters of S. pneumoniae that will be studied both at the
cellular and molecular level, in order to understand the relationship between virulence and
multidrug resistance in this bacteria.
JOB REQUIREMENTS: the applicant should have a strong background in both protein
biochemistry (purification and biochemical/biophysical characterisation) and molecular
biology (PCR, cloning, over-expression, site-directed mutagenesis…). Additional knowledge
in membrane protein will be appreciated.
SCIENTIFIC ENVIRONMENT: the Institute for Structural Biology is located in the
“Polygone Scientifique” in Grenoble, nearby the EMBL outstation, the ESRF and the ILL,
which is one of the most renowned scientific area in France for biological studies. For more
information see: http://www.psb-grenoble.eu/ or http://www.ibs.fr/content/ibs/home/
TO APPLY: Please send by email a CV and the names of two referees to Jean-Michel Jault
(at both of the following addresses, please): [email protected] ; [email protected]
and to Thierry Vernet at : [email protected]
