MASTER PLAN
DR CHAU CHAK WING
BUILDING | HOME TO THE
UTS BUSINESS SCHOOL
This landmark building is the first Australian project for renowned
architect Frank Gehry and is a highlight of the billion-dollar
redevelopment of UTS’s City Campus. Its unique design is a physical
manifestation of the innovative thinking that underpins the
UTS Business School.
KEY
FEATURES
Façade: Around 320,000 custom-designed
bricks pay homage to Sydney’s sandstone
heritage, with the fluid appearance of the
brickwork achieved by corbelling individual
bricks. The dramatic glass ‘curtain wall’
on the building’s western side mirrors the
building’s contemporary city surrounds.
Stainless steel stair: Creating a sculptural
focal point in the main lobby, the mirrored
surface of the stair reflects the movement of
both people and ideas.
Oval classroom: Two oval classrooms are
constructed from 150 large glue-laminated
timber beams, each weighing up to two
tonnes with the longest measuring 12
metres. The classrooms are designed to
support 360° engagement and are among
a number of collaborative learning
spaces throughout the building.
