A-Level Biology Unit 4: Chapter 2 ATP
Common Exam Questions and Model Answers
Why is ATP useful?
 Broken down in a one step / single bond broken;
 Immediate energy compound/makes energy available rapidly;
 Phosphorylates/adds phosphate;
 Makes (phosphorylated substances) more reactive / lowers activation energy;
 Reformed/made again;

Give two ways in which the properties of ATP make it a suitable source (this means RELEASE not storage)
of energy in biological processes.
 Energy released in small/suitable amounts;
 Soluble;
 Involves a single/simple reaction;
Give 2 advantages of ATP as an energy storing molecule
So… if in doubt these two would be best:
1) Involves a single reaction to break it down
2) Energy rapidly released in small amounts
Why do we need to synthesise a large mass of ATP each day?
1. ATP is unstable;
2. ATP cannot be stored / is an immediate source of energy;
3. Named process uses ATP ;
4. ATP only releases a small amount of energy at a time;
Write a simple equation to show how ATP is synthesised from ADP.
ADP + Pi → ATP;
How is ATP used in a cell (be careful to think about type of cell mentioned)
