RESOLUTION
SOLUTIONS FOR THE UNSC
BY JOVD, NETHERLANDS
LYMEC, gathered in Rotterdam on the 3rd of May 2015.
Noting that:

The current UNSC is a representation of the post-war situation,

The five permanent members of the UNSC have a veto,

The ten temporary members of the UNSC are elected by the General Assembly of the UN,

There is an intense lobby for the temporary seats in the UNSC.
Considering that:

The UNSC, because of its huge importance, deserves practical solutions,

The composition of the UNSC is an insufficient representation of the current political and
economic situation,

The third and fourth largest economy, Japan and Germany, are not permanent members of the
UNSC,

Germany now plays a dominant role in the European Union and with that in global politics,

The Indian Ocean, according to Robert D. Kaplan, is going to be crucial for the world economy in
the 21th century,

India, because of its geographic situation, is very committed to the Indian Ocean,

None of the current permanent members of the UNSC border the Indian Ocean,

India and Japan could together form a democratic counterweight in Asia to the dictatorships in
China and Russia,

There is no South-American permanent member of the UNSC,

Brazil its role in international politics is of increasing importance,

An UNSC consisted of the current five permanent members and Brazil, India, Japan and
Germany would be a SC committed to the whole world,

The veto of the permanent members blocks progress in international politics,

Some of the current members of the UNSC use the veto mostly to protect their own interests,
not to solve international problems;

The lobby for the temporary seats in the UNSC consists of giving presents and visiting countries,

This is an undesirable but inevitable way of lobbying,

The refusal of Saudi-Arabia to take place as a temporary member of the UNSC illustrates that
the temporary members don't have any actual influence in the UNSC,
LYMEC calls for:

Permanent membership of India, Brazil, Japan and Germany of the UNSC,

Substitution of the veto-system for a system where the UNSC adopts resolutions with at least a
majority of two-third,

Hereby ending the possibility of temporary membership of the UNSC.
