There are various livestock diseases.
Viral,bacterial,fungal & nutritional
deficiencies
These cause economic losses to farmers.
Karamoja has high population of livestock.

Farmers practice nomadic pastrolism.



Disease control and prevention not simple.
Work was done in karasarich –kotido district.
Goat Plague(PPR)&Contagious caprine pleural
pneumonia(CCPP) vaccinated in sheep &
goats.

Contagious bovine pleural pneumonia (CBPP)
was vaccinated in cattle.

Vaccines provided by Oxfam and MAAIF.





Kotido is found in northern Uganda.
In the Karamoja sub-region.
Bordered by kabong in north, Moroto in the
east, Napak in the south and Abim in west.
Has estimated human population of 203,900.
Main source of livelihood is livestock.





District veterinary health records reviewed.
Parishes with high prevalence of cases
chosen.
Mobilization done by Elders and local radio.
Subcutaneous route used for PPR & CCPP.
Tail tip used for CBPP in cattle.

There was low vaccination coverage.
This was attributed to the following;
Inadequate staffing( 1 veterinarian).
Poor vaccine storage facilities.
Bad weather and over flooding of roads.
Insecurity in some areas.
Lack of transport in the field.
Poor cooperation from farmers.








To the government of Uganda;
Improve on security conditions in the region.
To the district local council (kotido);
Recruit more staff in veterinary department.
Offer logistical support to the department.
Procure solar powered refrigeration facilities.
To the farmers;
Cooperate whenever such interventions are
done.





