Aim: How did Africans Resist Imperialism?
Do Now: 1. Analyze the following images. 2. How do these images reflect African
culture prior to European Imperialism?
Imperialism In Africa
• Europeans felt that Africans were not using the
natural resources from their land, meanwhile the
Europeans needed natural resources for
industrialization.
• Europeans met at the Berlin Conference in 1884 and
used military force and “trickery” in order to
colonize Africa.
Domain-Specific Vocabulary
1. Maji Maji Rebellion: a violent resistance to colonial German rule
by several indigenous communities in German East Africa
2. Shaka Zulu: one of the most influential monarchs of the Zulu
Kingdom.
3. Menelik II: Emperor of Ethiopia (1889–1913). One of Ethiopia’s
greatest rulers; expanded the empire almost to its present-day
borders; repelled an Italian invasion in 1896.
