DISCUSSION AND ESSAY QUESTIONS
1. What was “appeasement”? How might the Great Depression and World War I have an impact
on World War II and on the use of “appeasement” as a tool of international diplomacy? Did
“appeasement” contribute to the outbreak of World War II or was the war inevitable?
2. What were the elements of the military and diplomatic machine that made it possible for
Hitler to control most of continental Europe by 1941? Discuss the blitzkrieg warfare,
propaganda, and concepts of superiority in the rise of German power in World War II.
3. What was the basis for Hitler’s social program to maintain racial purity? What groups were
targeted? How did this social philosophy lead to the “Final Solution”? What was the response
of the Allies to Hitler’s policies of racial extermination? Did the Japanese develop any racial or
social policies similar to those of the Germans? If so, how do the two compare?
4. How were the Allies able to carve out a victory in Europe and in the Pacific? What were the
contributions of each of the Allied powers? What was the turning point of the war? How did
the relative contributions of the various Allied powers to the war effort affect the postwar
settlement? Why might the Soviets claim to have borne the brunt of World War II in so many
ways?
5. World War II shifted global power away from Europe, completing a process begun in World
War I. Which war do you think was more devastating to European global power? Explain.
