Set-up of a Variable Saturated Vertical Flow Model
A variable saturated flow model was set up with GROUNDWATER VISTAS and
MODFLOW SURFACT to assess the significance of various input parameters for
recharge to groundwater in heterogeneous drift deposits in Northwest England.
Curriculum Vitae Ralf Klingbeil
Hydrogeological Assessment of the Drift Cover below SSSI Moors
The hydrogeological importance of the drift cover below protected moor sites in
Northeast England was assessed to determine water losses to the underlying
sandstone aquifer. An MICROSOFT ACCESS data base was transferred into an EQUIS
Geology data base and into ROCKW ORKS to produce various cross sections.
Development of a Water Balance Program for a River Catchment
To evaluate the effect of different groundwater abstractions in a low flow river
catchment in central England a water balance program was developed. The program
involved a combination of time series data and two-dimensional maps stored and
presented in ArcView (GIS) data format.

Modelling of Groundwater Flow Between the Cretaceous Mountain Aquifer
Systems and the Jordan - Dead Sea Area
As part of the "German-Israeli-Jordanian-Palestinian Joint Research Program for the
Utilisation of Aquifer Systems" groundwater resources were evaluated by
groundwater flow and transport modelling. Due to the highly saline groundwater in
the vicinity of the Dead Sea and lower Jordan river valley the simulations were
performed with the software FEFLOW which takes into account the effects of density
driven flow. The project involved the organisation of (hydro-)geological mapping and
parameter estimations, geophysical measuring and data collection in geographical
information systems (GIS). Supervision of M.Sc. projects in co-operation with the
local partner organisations. Results were presented at international conferences.
Hydrogeological Field Investigations and Water Resources Evaluations in

Outcrop Analogue Studies - Implications for Groundwater Flow and
Contaminant Transport in Heterogeneous Glaciofluvial Quaternary Deposits
Field work was organised and performed, including the development of technical
equipment and supervision of software development for a gas measurement
equipment to be used in the laboratory and with an excavator in the field for the in
situ determination of permeabilities. The GIS software ARC/INFO and ARCVIEW were
used to interpret the digitised outcrop photographs sedimentologically and to
incorporate the determined hydrogeological parameters. The parameter fields were
evaluated using the geostatistical software GSLIB. The data was used as input for
groundwater flow and transport modelling to evaluate the effect of the sorption
behaviour of different pollutants on the effective retardation. The simulations were
performed with MODFLOW and MODPATH together with some own developed FORTRAN
codes. The work was presented in research seminars and at international
conferences.
12/1993-11/1994 Hydrogeologist

The groundwater pollution risk of contaminated land sites was evaluated and
classified at different sites in Hamburg, Kiel and vicinity. The drilling of observation
