Sedimentary Rocks Rocks formed when sediment (pieces of broken shells, rocks, mineral grains and other material) gathers in layers. Detrital Rocks - made of grains of minerals or other rocks that have moved and been deposited in layers and cemented together by pressure and other minerals. - categorized by size of mineral grain: clay < silt < sand < pebble - examples: shale, siltstone, sandstone, and conglomerate Chemical Rocks Organic Rocks -formed when mineral-rich water evaporates and leaves behind a deposit of the mineral - formed from the remains of living matter (takes millions of years) -example: halite - fossils can be found in some organic rocks - examples: coal, limestone, and chalk
