Sedimentary Rocks
Rocks formed when sediment (pieces of broken shells, rocks,
mineral grains and other material) gathers in layers.
Detrital Rocks

made of grains of
minerals or other
rocks that have
moved and been
deposited in layers
and cemented
together by pressure
and other minerals.

mineral grain: clay <
silt < sand < pebble

examples: shale,
siltstone, sandstone,
and conglomerate
Chemical Rocks
Organic Rocks
-formed when mineral-rich
water evaporates and leaves
behind a deposit of the
mineral
- formed from the remains
of living matter (takes
millions of years)
-example: halite
- fossils can be found in
some organic rocks
- examples: coal, limestone,
and chalk
