AVID Site Team ROLES
AVID Coordinator















The Coordinator is a strong student advocate who is committed to the philosophy of the AVID program
including the support for equity and access
Leads the building of the AVID site team (add World Language teacher this year)
Provides the leadership for the development and maintenance of an active Site Team
Acts as the liaison between site team, vice principal director
Acts as program’s liaison with vice principal, counselor and teachers
Collaborates with different sites and grade levels to articulate program
Advocates and provides staff development regarding AVID methodologies as requested
Organizes student recruitment efforts and facilitates selection process
Communicates on a regular basis with parents/teachers regarding students’ progress
Manages AVID budget, facilitates data collection, and Certification
Organizes all AVID activities such as field trips, , parent meetings, banquets, fundraisers, and publicity
Heads selection process of, monitors, and assists tutors
Works collaboratively with district personnel to organize tutor training
Provides information about colleges to students and maintains contacts with college counselors, and officials
(with AVID Counselor)
Acts as a community liaison with Administrator (spokesperson for program)
AVID Elective Teacher:










Sets high expectations for student achievement and monitors student’s progress
Is a well respected instructional leader and has at least 3-5 years teaching experience
Promotes the use of the WICR strategies by all AVID students
Helps train tutors using the AVID tutor training materials
Advocates for AVID students, especially with challenges of access and equity
Oversees the Certification and Data Collection processes
Ensures the Site Team is engaged in Certification, Data Collection and the promotion of schoolwide use of
WICR
Organize guest speakers for the classroom
Sets high expectations for student achievement, sets goals and monitors student’s progress
Develops a “family” attitude among AVID students
District Director:





Ideally, an assistant superintendent of instruction or curriculum director
Act as a liaison between the district office and AVID Center
Acts as a representative on the regional AVID Advisory Board
Provides philosophical, moral and financial support to AVID programs within the district
Coordinates Middle Level and High School programs within the district
Principal:





Provides philosophical and financial support for AVID teachers, students and tutors
Acts as a liaison with district administration
Supports equal access to AP and honors course (with VP)
Coordinates AVID program with other categorical and core curricula programs to avoid fragmentation
Communicates and encourages support for AVID teachers, parents, and community (with VP)
Vice Principal:


Support by giving AVID a high priority in development
Schedules AVID as a regular school elective class to facilitate student access

Assigns a course number to the AVID class so that students receive appropriate credit
Maintains AVID class size so it’s comparable to any academic class size at the school
Provides common prep periods, if possible, for coordinator and subject area teachers on the AVID Site Team
Supports AVID coordinator’s role in selecting, assigning, and evaluation AVID tutors
Serves as a liaison and advocate between the principal/district administration and the site team
Counselor:










Ideally, should be the same person for all AVID students during the course of their high school experience
Works closely with AVID coordinator to develop plan for articulation and recruitment
Promotes AVID as an elective and counsels students and parents on overcoming obstacles and breaking
stereotypes
Refers students to program coordinator to initiate selection process
Facilitates registration of AVID students into rigorous courses with appropriate teachers
Conferences with AVID parents and students to plan long term college prep course of student, including
information about the application process for college and financial aid procedures
Communicates on a regular basis with coordinator/teachers/parents regarding progress of AVID students
Visits classrooms of subject area teachers to monitor student needs
Establishes links with counselors at other sties and grade levels to develop articulated courses of study for
students
Participates in AVID activities, such as field trips, parent meetings and Site Team
Subject Area Teacher:









Committed to student success and improved student learning
Active in schoolwide reform and restructuring
Committed to AVID philosophy that all students should have equal access to rigorous college prep courses
Holds high academic expectations of students
Trained in, understands, and enthusiastically implements AVID methodologies (specifically, Cornell notes &
STAR method of note taking), materials, and strategies in classroom instruction
Collaborates with Site Team
Performs as an Advocate for AVID by encouraging other teachers in subject areas to adopt AVID philosophy
through modeling and departmental discussion
Refers potential students to AVID Coordinator
Site Team Subject Area Teachers Only:
 Supports AVID program through attendance at AVID functions and activities
 Assists with AVID’s Data Collection and Certification processes
Tutor:









Trained in AVID methodologies through tutor training given by regional office
Provides academic support to students to ensure success in rigorous coursework
Leads subject specific study groups
Provides direct instruction under the coordinator’s supervision
Acts as a role model for AVID students
Visits subject area classrooms to observe and assist AVID students
Informs elective teacher of student progress
Assists in organization and participates at functions and in activities (min. of 10 volunteer hours per year)
Advocates for AVD tutor program among college peers to build pool of tutors
Students:



Possesses the desire and potential to succeed in rigorous courses
Is committed to hard work to attain goals
Exhibits a positive attitude toward themselves and others

Is open to new experiences in all phases of the programs
Wants to become an independent learner
Acts as a model student in the classroom, taking notes, listening, questioning, and being prepared
Willingly cooperates and collaborates with peers as part of a team
Shares work for the purpose of improving it
Keeps parents in formed of academic progress
Expects and anticipates college enrollment after graduation
Becomes actively involved in a variety of campus activities
Parents:



Provide emotional, philosophical, and academic support to students by:
 Showing interest in their students’ schoolwork
 Providing students with a time and place to study
 Insisting that students do their homework and class assignments
Attend AVID functions and activities
Advise and assist their child to develop responsible decision making

Provides motivational/informational speakers
Promotes a mentor program
Allows for an exchange program with professors of college freshman level classes
Provides opportunities for AVID students to attend speaker days at the colleges
Expedites AVID students’ college application and financial aid papers
Includes AVID students in Summer Bridge programs
Tracks AVID students throughout their freshman year and gives tutorial or social-emotional support if needed
