

The rough riders were a cavalry regiment made of former cowhands and college
students, led by Theodore Roosevelt. They became war heroes because for their
boldness and bravery.
A protectorate is an independent country but under the control of another country. A
territory is completely controlled by another country.
It showed the world that the U.S. could now easily defeat one of the world’s stronger
navies, which meant that it could hold its own against any world power. Also, by
acquiring several new important territories, the U.S. became an empire and joined other
world powers in the fight to acquire territories in the Pacific and the Caribbean and
trading rights in Asia.
