Why we need the Prince of Wales Reservoir The new reservoir is needed to: • increase water storage for the community •provide resilient emergency water storage for residents, businesses and public facilities in the area • provide back-up water storage for operational reasons. All Wellington’s bulk water supply pipelines bring water to Wellington from Upper Hutt, and cross major earthquake faults. It’s very likely that Wellington’s water supply will be disrupted in the event of a severe earthquake. The new reservoir will add capacity to Wellington’s water storage network improving Wellington City’s resilience to disaster events affecting water supply. KEY Main faults – demonstrably active Second order faults – demonstrably active Note: Map is indicative only The reservoir will be built to modern seismic standards and to a standard to ensure that it remains fully operational following a significant earthquake. Increasing the amount of water stored in the area will enhance the operational resilience of the water supply network by allowing Wellington Water to undertake essential maintenance, repair and upgrade works of other reservoirs with little or no disruption to local water supply.
